Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about lucid dream, long haul, nightmare

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of lucid dream, long haul, nightmare

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

show a picture of video games and also someone dreaming, and another picture of a "lucid dream" and elicit the words from the students. ask students if they think dreaming and videogaming are related and why to start a class discussion and get students interested in the topic.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

pre-teach "parallel universe" with images, CCQs such as "is a dream a parallel universe?" "what about video games? "is it real life?" show images of video games and imaginary worlds. show students images that help visualise what the text is saying. regular gamer=less nightmares, non-gamers=more frequent show gamer, then going to bed sleeping peacefully, then show image fighting, to indicate that gamers tend to fight "enemies" as a character in their nightmares, because they are so used to being in a parallel universe.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

hand questions sheet to students, then ask them to skim read the text. answer questions and check answers in pairs. give feedback in the form of class feedback, ask students their answers and make sure everybody agrees. make sure to clear up any confusion if there is any disagreements.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

true or false questions. ask students to scan the text and answer the qs first individually, then to work in pairs to check answers. while students are working in pairs, monitor to check who is on the right track and has finished early and ask them to write the answers on the board. this is an efficient use of time as feedback and to ensure nobody is sitting around doing nothing or struggling for too long on the task. if there are any disagreements elicit the correct answer and justify why they are correct/incorrect. ensure everything is clear to students.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

as a freer actvity, allow students to answer questions in (e) in pairs, ask them to move around and ask a different question to a different person. monitor discussions to make sure the concept is properlu understood.
