Description

This lesson main aim is to practice listening and its sub aim its to practice speaking and writing in the context of traveling (topic mega-cities). It will build upon what my colleagues taught in the lessons before it and maintain the same theme (traveling).

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about megacities in the context of travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of mega-cities/travel
  • To provide clarification of vocabulary in the context of travel (megacities) (impression, enthusiastic, auto rickshaw, possibility, vendor, exhibition)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Share personal story: Show pictures of favorite city: Cardiff, UK Cardiff, is the capital of Wales with an estimated population of 350,000 I like Cardiff because it is quiet, it has many parks, I can walk everywhere Show pictures of megacity CCQ: what is the difference between Cardiff and these cities. (They are megacities i.e. bigger population)

Pre-listening (10-12 minutes) • To introduce the students to blocking vocabulary

ICQ: I will give you a list of words and definitions. Please match the words with the correct definition. Please complete the task in pairs Give them handouts WC feedback (answer key on board)

Listening for gist (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks in the context of Mega-cities/Traveling

Listen to the audio and answer 1- What is a mega-city? 2- What is the biggest mega-city? Which is the smallest? 3- What happened in 2008? PW check WC FB (Answer key on projector)

Listening for detail (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks in the context of mega-cities/traveling

ICQ: Listen to these people from three megacities. 1. What do they like about their city? 2. What do they say about…? o the people o the climate o transport o things to do CCQ: What are you going to wright? If they don't talk about transport or what they like that is OK (sometimes they don't). ICQ: I will give you a list of sentences and you have to guess which one is true and which one is false. Listen to the audio again and write T next to the true sentence and F next to he false sentence.

Writing and freer activity (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to use the language they have listened to, practice writing and speaking

You have 2 minutes to write about - What is your favorite city? and Why you like it? you can talk about the -weather -people -food -transportation -buildings and history -money and business -other Mingle with 3 people and find out what is their favorite city and why they like it. I will ask you later what you found
