Description

In this lesson, the SS are going to listen to work on their receptive skill by listening for the gist and detailed information in which three people talk about different attitudes to family in different countries.Then, they are going to practice speaking about families in the past and modern families today.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about across cultures attitudes to family

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of differences between old and modern families

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-greet Ss -project the images of extended and nuclear family -ask the Ss to talk in pairs what types of families they see and ask the differences -monitor -ask the class CCQs: Is this a small or large family? Who do you see in the picture? Do you see just father, mother, and children? In which family do you see grand parents?

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- elicit or teach a few vocabulary items: What are the differences between these two families? In which one do children do what the parents say? -write independent on the board. Do independent children need parents' help? Do children " take part in" family activities in an extended family or in a nuclear one? -Write take part in" on the board. In which family are the children more "independent?" -the same with: elderly

While Listening for Gist (4-7 minutes) • To encourage SS to listen for gist understanding

-project the picture of Patty, Quang, and Cigdem What is her/his name? Where is she/he from? -explain that the SS are going to listen to these three people and write the correct name -ask the SS what these three people are going to talk about ICQs: Do you write numbers? (No) What do you write? (Names) -give the SS the HO -play the audio once -SS check in pairs -ask different SS to write the answers on the board -check with the whole class

While Listening for detailed information (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

-explain to the SS that they are going to listen again and answer the Qs -chest the detail HO ICQs: What do you write? (T or F) Do you write names? (No) Do you write T or F? (Yes) -give them the HO -play the audio again -SS answer on their own -SS check in pairs -play in case necessary -SS write the answers on the board -check with the WC

Post Listening task (8-10 minutes) • To provide the SS with an opportunity to develop oral fluency by practicing speaking about their families in the past and modern families

-explain to SS that they are going to talk about their families in the past and modern families today -make a list of or highlight some words on the board: children, parents, duty, independent,free, allow, take part ICQs: Do you talk about today or past? Who do you talk about? What do you talk about? -SS talk in groups of three -monitor -ask individual SS to talk about the topic -delayed error correction
