Description

In this lesson Ss learn about comparative adjectives and how to use them when comparing 2 cities

Materials

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, the Ss will have learnt comparative adjectives in the context of my move from London to Izmir

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, the Ss will have practiced speaking, for accuracy and fluency, in the context

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher shows a video about 2 different places to set the context

Exposure/Highlighting (5-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher personalises the context by telling her story about moving from London to Izmir.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher projects comparison photos between London and Izmir and elicits and teaches comparative adj. Please see language analysis for specific focus areas and anticipated problems and solutions.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss answer the questions at the handouts individually and then pair check. The answer key will be given as FB. The aim is to make sure -ier and er to become clear, to show the use of 'more' and regular comparative adj.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss work in pairs to use the language taught. They will have handouts. They will work in pairs, build a dialogue and then discuss in pairs. WC FB will be used.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will compare their favourite city with Izmir individually. Then will discuss in pairs and as a whole class. Teacher monitors and makes delayed error correction if necessary.
