Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-12 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Watch the video. Task - what is the topic? What words do you see / think of? Sts in pairs brainstorm lexis related to 'The Economic Crisis'. Drill key lexis: Recession (n), Economic crisis (n),

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show visual of Peter Black. Ask Qs: - How old is he? What's his job? Tell them he is dead. Ask them to write 3 questions to ask about Peter Black. Elicit a few questions on the w/b.

While-Reading (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Give text. Read the text and see if you can find the answers to your questions. Pairs - ask your partner your questions. Give comprehension questions. Sts read the text again and ask the comprehension Qs to their partner. Scanning task. In groups the sts take a definition from the teacher and see if they can find the word in the text.

Post-Reading/Listening (30-40 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Role Play. On w/b - visuals of Peter Black and Personnel Manager. Ask them to consider this interview. Pairs brainstorm: What do they talk about. Elicit - references, notice period, redundancy money, health insurance, re-training opportunities etc. How do we give bad news? Categorise the expressions. drilling for pronunciation. Role Play.
