Main Aims

  • To provide practice reading for detailed and specific information using a text about an inside story in the context of air travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of air travel
  • To provide review of various vocabulary items in the context of air travel

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

SS discuss questions in small groups: "Have you ever flown on an airplane?" (yes/no) "How do you feel about air travel?" Why? [If you haven't flown before, tell us if you think you would like it or not? Why?" Monitor - help if needed. FB - Nominate Ss to share their experience.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss read the back cover of a book called "Air Babylon" and try to guess the answers with a partner. Monitor - help if needed. FB - Nominate Ss to talk about their guesses. Write down the answers on the board. Before starting reading let's review some vocabulary from the text. Show HO_vocab and ask Ss to fill in the gaps with the correct word. Monitor - help I needed. FB - Peer check and then whole class answers. Check understanding of meaning using CCQ. - Language Analysis document. Model and drill vocabulary. - Language Analysis doc.

While-Reading1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with specific information reading task

Ss read the text for 3 minutes and find out about the answers to the questions from the previous activity. This is a solo activity. Monitor - help if needed. FB - Ss peer check answers first and then w/c session. Compare guesses to real answers.

While-Reading2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ss read text again to answer some True/False questions. Monitor - help when needed. FB - Peer check answers. W/c session.

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss discuss following questions in small groups: 1. Did you find any of the information surprising? Which? 2. Do you believe it at all? Monitor - help if needed. FB- w/c discussion.
