Beginner level


In this lesson SS learn vocabulary about places in a city (a train station, a hotel, a bridge, an airport, a park, a river, a museum, a castle, and a beach). Second, they read a text about 2 cities; Barcelona and Prague. SS should skim the text and complete the blanks with 3 phrases (where to stay, getting there, things to see and read). Then, they scan the text and mark 7 sentences with B for Barcelona and P for Prague. Finally, if there was time, they practice a short speaking skill, talking about where they like to visit (in pairs).

Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide vocabulary for places in city in the context of weekend city break and make them ready for reading text. Speaking for fluency regarding the reading context will be practiced.


Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

"hello" "how are you?" "did you have a nice weekend?" "what do you do if you have a short holiday(break)?" "do you like to visit a city?" Izmir for eg." "who has visited Izmir?is it nice? "I want to visit Izmir this weekend, so I go to different places"

Vocabulary (3-4 minutes) • To teach them vocabulary of places in city, make them prepare for reading text

Show pictures of new vocabulary which are 9 places (train station, airport, museum, hotel, park, castle, bridge, river, beach) one by one. Elicit, drill.

matching activity (5-6 minutes) • to provide SS controlled practice of vocabulary

Chest HO "match pictures with words. 9 signs.Individual work. While check in pairs, give tags to early finishers to stick to the pictures on the WB. Then models one on by one, drilling (whole class, individually). point to "a" (a train, a river,.... ) and "an" in an airport. highlight "a" . beach (singular) - beaches (plural) highlight "es" /‘biːtʃɪz/ bridge (singular) - bridges (plural) highlight "es" /ˈbrɪdʒɪz/

Pre-reading (5-6 minutes) • Reading: To provide context for the target language through a text about weekend break in Barcelona and Prague

show 4 pictures on WB (castle, museum, beach, bridge) "what are these?" "where are they?in which country?" "do you like to visit these places?" "you are going to read a text about 2 cities in Europe. Before you read we are going to check the meaning of some words" CCQ : break: " Is break a short holiday?" famous: "Do many people know Kivanc Tatlitug (Turkish actor)? he's famous. Stadium: you watch football in a S... . architect: show picture puppet show: show picture after teaching each word, model, drill.

While-Reading (5-6 minutes) • Reading for gist to complete a blank with given phrases

Chest HO, "read 2 brochures (information) about Barcelona and Prague and answer question 1. read quickly, ICQ, should you know all the words?"no "there are 6 gaps and 3 phrases", write phrases on the WB; where to stay, getting there, things to see and go" . For eg. read 1st paragraph, elicit the answer from SS while pointing at the board. show the answer on HO. give HO. wait 3 minutes. individual task, check in pairs.elicit answers and write on the WB.

While-Reading2 (4-5 minutes) • Read for specific information to mark 7 sentences with B for Barcelona and P for Prague

Chest HO,"Read the text again and answer question 2. 7 sentences about text. if the sentence is about Barcelona, write B, if it's about Prague write P". give a few minute. After checking in pairs, elicit answers and write on the WB.

Post-Reading (5-6 minutes) • speaking fluency with regard to reading context

Change groups (give numbers to half of the class, from 1 to 6 or 7 (depending on the number of SS in class) do the same for rest for the other half of the class, SS number 1 sit together, SS number 2 together... . SS are divided in 2 groups, Barcelona, Prague. SS work in pairs. give them 2min. SS A read Barcelona, B read Prague. "Tell you partner where to stay and what to do, write these on the WB. For eg. Student A: stay in hotel in city centre, go for a walk,... . Speak to your partner. "Then change your role".
