Main Aims

  • Grammar: Present perfect with 'for' and 'since' to talk about unfinished actions in the context of the topic 'Time'

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking for fluency within the topic 'Time and time zones' and about their own life experience using Present perfect with 'for' and 'since'

Procedure

Warm-in/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To check what Ss might have known about the topic they are going to study

Give a short exercise (HO 1, ex.1) to Ss to test their knowledge of usage 'for' and 'since' in the Present perfect tense. Ask to choose the correct auxiliary verb form and preposition and check if they are able to identify the difference in their meaning. Give them answer keys to check in pairs.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for target language through a text or situation

Write two unfinished sentences on the board, ask Ss where these sentences come from. (from the text of the previous session) 1. We have had standard time for less than..... 2. Greenwich internet time has existed since.... See if Ss can complete, referring to the text if necessary. After completing these two sentences from the text, try to elicit the difference between 'for' and 'since'. If necessary provide some prompts such as eg Sunday, two months, ask them to decide if these are 'points in time' or 'periods of time'. Refer them to the grammar explanation.

Focus on Meaning and Form (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, the use and the form of the target language

Write a sentence on the WB: I .....my watch since I was 21. Try to elicit Present perfect. After eliciting the Present perfect, the teacher will draw a time-line on the WB and ask CCQs to clarify the meaning of the whole sentence. eg. When did I buy my watch? Do I still have it? Then the teacher writes 'The Present perfect' on the WB. Tell that the Present perfect connects past and present, and it is often used with 'for', 'since' and 'how long'. Ask Ss to fill the gaps in another ex. (HO 2). Work individually, then compare your answers in pairs. Then provide a whole class check, ask Ss to say why they made their choice of preposition, using the language from the grammar section.

Focus on Pronunciation (2-3 minutes) • To focus on phonological aspects of the target language

Remind Ss that the auxilary verb 'have' i contracted: I've lived. Drill some examples. Then do some substitution drills: eg. Teacher: I've lived in Istanbul since childhood. Student: I've lived in Istanbul since chidhood. Teacher: Ankara. Student: I've lived in Ankara since chidhood. Teacher: I've worked hard for two weeks. Student: I've worked hard for two weeks. Teacher: Three days Student: I've worked hard for three days. etc.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To check the understanding of meaning and the use of TL

Students will complete the ex.2, p.79. Global Course book. Then they check the answers in pairs by changing the partner sitting nearby.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide the Ss with the TL practice and prepare them to the next communicative task

After Ss have completed the ex.2, p.79.(Global Course book), ask them to use it as an example: Write the sentences with your own ideas and compare with your partner. The second stage - transform you sentences using another preposition. eg. I've studied English since I was 12 - I've studied English for 14 years. Check in pairs of four.

Free practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide the Ss with free practice of the TL

Whole class mingle. Find someone WHO... If there is some time left, the teacher may propose another game: How long have you..? to play in pairs.
