Description

In this lesson, students learn about Present Simple Tense through guided discovery based on a text about carmen's life. The lesson will start with a warmer and then go on with the reading text. Students will underline the answers of the questions asked by the teacher. Later, teacher will elicit the form and meaning of the present simple tense from the students and write on the board. Then, students will do fill in the blanks and writing the negative form activities. Lastly, students will have free practice in which they will talk about themselves to their partners.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher greets the students and revise the verbs like, have, live, work, study. She wants students to do some actions according to her instructions. First she says if you are a boy, stand up and then if you are a girl stand up to help the students understand the activity. Then, she shows some pictures and say, if you like cats, change your places. If you have a sister change your places. If you live in a flat, change your places. If you work for an Italian company, change your places. If you study English, change your places.

Exposure (6-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher asks some questions about the reading text and students look at the text about Carmen and they try to find the answers for the teacher's questions. they underline the answers from the text.

Highlighting & Clarification (9-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language and to clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher asks students to find the examples of the verbs from the text and writes some sentences on the board by using positive and negative form of present simple tense. She highlights the form. She explains the meaning of the forms. She shows contractions and gives more examples. Students listen to the sentences to improve their pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (9-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students do activity 5, they fill in the blanks by using present simple tense. They have 4 minutes to finish and when they finish they listen to the audio to check their answers and then they check with the teacher.

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students do the activity 6. They write the negative form of the sentences if they are not true for them. They have 3 minutes to complete the activity and then they check with the students sitting next to them and then together with the teacher.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students talk about themselves in pairs just like Carmen's text by using present simple tense. Teacher tells them they have minutes for each. When they are talking teacher monitors and gives feedback on their language after they finish.
