Main Aims

  • To provide students with practice for reading for gist and detailed information in the context of friends who are different.

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To review the vocabulary concerning friendship and to provide students with speaking practice for fluency.


Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss work in pairs and discuss if they agree or disagree with the statements below. Housemates should be friends. Finding a housemate through an advertisement is a good idea. Housemates with different habits can not live together Take w/c FB

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss work in pairs and match the expressions with meanings in order to review the vocabulary before reading the text Explain the task and give handouts Ss do the task Monitoring Take w/c FB and help with some pronunciation

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Ss look at the photos of Tina and Will at university and Tina and Will now and discuss in groups whether they think the statements in reading ex. 1 are true or false. Explain the task and give the handouts Take w/c FB and give ss the text to read and check their ideas. Take w/c FB

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss are going to read and put the lines of the summary about Tina and Will in the correct order Explain the task and give handouts Ss do the task Ss pair check and then take w/c FB

Post-Reading (8-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss to ask and answer the questions in speaking ex. 1 Monitor and help ss. Do a delayed error correction.
