Description

The students will get further reading practice. The students will talk about problems that occur around the house.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide the students with growth in their reading skills as they complete a prediction task that includes vocabulary relating to problems that occur in the house

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy in their speaking skills more specifically with the vocabulary relating to problems in the house

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Using the projector, post the pictures of problems that happen around the house. Have the students share with their partner for a minute. After, take some WC FB as to what the pictures have in common. -Share about the time I lived in Uzbekistan and the gas, water and electricity went out at the same time.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

-Pass the first HO to the Ss. Focus the Ss on the two pictures and ask them to write down what they think happened. -Have the Ss talk about what they think happened in pairs. After talking about them in pairs, take some FB time listening for the Ss knowledge of the vocabulary describing the situations. These words include power cut, flooded etc.

Task (11-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Handout the readings. Have the students read the stories to check if their ideas were right. Find out how many students predicted the story correctly (have the students raise their hands). Check the students understanding of vocab. Teach MFP for vocabulary. -Midwife -Torch -Candles -Storm -Blown off -Blown down Tell the students to cover the stories and see what they can remember about the four things listed for each story: Kurts story- 1. His son: He was born at home. His name is Kurt too. 2. the heating: it went off in the house during birth 3. candles: Kurt (father) lit candles around the room so they could see 4. the lights: they came back on just after his son was born. Phillip's story 1. a storm: There was a big storm in the middle of the night 2. roof: it blew off. In the morning, there was a big hole in it 3. water. Some pipes burst and there was water everywhere in the house 4. outside the house: a tree blew down in the garden. It was a complete mess -Make sure the students work alone

Task 2 (6-8 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

-Have the Ss read the stories again in pairs to check their ideas. -Teacher gets WC FB - Get FB from the Ss and hear how they think both people felt after the events.

Post reading Task (5-10 minutes) • To wrap up what the lesson was with an activity

Have the students attempt to draw a picture of a problem that happened at there house. After they draw the pictures, have them stand up with there pictures. Have the Ss go around observing each other's pictures and attempt to guess what the stories describe.

Language Analysis (0-0 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language
