Description

In this lesson Ss are going to practice listening for general and detailed understanding, and learn some vocabulary for parts of a house.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in listening for specific and detailed information in the context of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce the parts of a house in the context of a listening about 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Procedure

Lead-in\ pre-listening (3-5 minutes) • To set a prediction task before listening and to engage Ss to the topic of the listening context.

Direct the Ss' attention to the picture on the board. Elicit what they can see in the photo. ( do not correct or give any ideas at this stage). Focus Ss on the questions on the paper. Put Ss in groups of three or four and tell them to discuss the questions together. Give the Ss the handout. Monitor while group work. Whole class feedback. Praise their good guesses.

Listening for specific information (7-10 minutes) • To help students to understand the general idea of the listening text and search for some specific information.

Tell Ss to listen and put the questions in order. check that they do not have to answer, just put them in the order they hear them. Ss then check answers in pairs. check the answers with the whole class. Play the recording agin. Ss listen answer the questions and check their guesses. Ss then check in pairs. Nominate Ss to answer a question each time.

Listening for detailed understanding. (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Focus the Ss on the numbers in the box. Give Ss time to go through the sentences, read them and guess the answers. Ss listen and fill in the gaps with the numbers from the box. Ss then check in pairs. Nominate some Ss to give the answers.

Post-Listening (4-7 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to respond to the text and learn some vocabulary about parts of the house

Put Ss in pairs. Ask Ss to tell each other if they would like to visit this famous house or not. Monitor. Nominate Ss to tell the class about their partner's opinion. hold up the paper to show the Ss . Tell them to match the pictures with the words. Ss work individually. Monitor without any real interference. Ss then check in pairs. Check the answers with the class. Drill the words chorally and individually.

Follow up speaking activity (10-13 minutes) • To set a freer speaking task

Tell Ss to talk about their dream houses. Tell them about mine briefly. Give Ss time to write down about it individually. Monitor and help. Put Ss in groups. Ss take turns to tell each other about their dream houses. Ss then choose the best house in their groups. Ask some of the Ss to talk about their partner's dream house.( the one they picked as the best).
