Description

In this lesson students learn expressions with "look" through a listening in the context of "fashion". Introduced to the topic through engaging visuals, students discuss their ideas on "looks" and "appearances". After this warm-up, they listen to two gist and detail focused conversations. After practising their listening skills, they do a vocabulary exercise through which they test their understanding of the expressions. Finally, they practise the usage of these expressions through a speaking which allows them to share their own ideas.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- greeting - project images of Victoria Beckham, Helena Bonham Carter and David Beckham. - Elicit students' ideas on the fashion of these stars by: Who are they? What are they wearing? Which one of them is into fashion? How appropriately are they dressed? - project visuals of two different quotations - ask students to do a pair discussion - WCF

While-Listening- Gist (6-8 minutes) • To develop their gist listening in the context of "fashion" and introduction to expressions with "look"

- Instructions to the listening exercise and ICQs - Listen CD1 track 1.15-1.16 - Project the questions - Listening - Checking aswers in pairs - WCF on projection

While-Listening- Detailed (10-12 minutes) • To provide students detailed listening tasks

- Listen CD1 track 1.15-1.16 again and answer these questions - Provide students with the transcript - Checking aswers in pairs - Everyone reports back

Post-listening activity (4-5 minutes) • To check students' understanding of the context "fashion"

- Project ex.3 from 2B questions - Ask them to discuss these with partners - Elicit different answers

Focus on Vocabulary (8-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to test their understanding of expressions with "look" by providing CCQs

-Give them H0s of ex. 1-2 p.28 - Ask them to look at the paper individually - Pairs and check - Whole class and check -CCQs - 1- Can I say look your best to a high school student who has a physics exam the next day? 2- If I said "I get looks everytime I go to a restaurant in Istanbul wearing my favourite bikini" would it be p or n? 3- If I say by the look of it, this tree must be 1000 years old. Do I criticize it? 5- CAn I use another word for have a look ( yes- look) 6- is looking a verb here? 7- can I use another word for look (yes- style)

Controlled Vocabulary Practice (5-7 minutes) • Check their understanding of "look" expressions through a given frame

- project questions from workbook p. 17 ex. 1 - match them with their partner - close your eyes choose randomly avoiding spotlighting and give them markers - tell them to come up to the board - final short corrections if there is any

Freer practice (5-7 minutes) • To make sure students get to practice what they have learnt through questions about themselves.

- pair up and tell them to interview each other with the exercise 2, SB, p. 28 - elicit some answers - make corrections where necessary
