Description

This lesson students will review and practice of present perfect simple and continuous in the context health and illnesses

Materials

Abc Latham-Koenig, C. & Oxenden, C. (2014) English File UpInt Ss Bk 3rd Edition, OUP

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of present perfect simple and continuous in the context of health and illness

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of health and illness
  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about conversation between a doctor and patient and the doctor and nurse in the context of health and illness

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show students a photo of a man and said: " This is Mr. Blair", then show pictures with different illness: a headache, a toothache, stomach, a back pain, a temperature, broken leg etc. Let them guess, what kind of problem Mr. Blair can have. Ask Ss: When was the last time you were ill? What was wrong with you? What did you do?

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Say: We will listen now dialog between Mr. Blair and a doctor. Ask Ss to concentrate on two questions: what symptoms does the patient have? What does the doctor suggest? Play the audio once the whole way through. Then Ss checking answers with person next to them, after w/c FB

Highlighting (10-12 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Write on the board two sentences: I have done. I have been doing. Ask students: What kind of tenses they are? For example, the action started in the past & continues till now, or finished actions that have an effect in the present. Draw on board timeline for better visualization. Write on board constructions of each tense. Let Ss take a look on ex 3b, give Ss few minutes to take a look at the gaps in the conversation and to guess what the missing words might be. Play audio for Ss to listen and complete the gaps. play again if necessary. Peer checking( person next to them) w/c FB

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students tell differences between sentences f.e: Have you been taking anything for the headaches? and Have you taken anything for the headaches? P/W students circle the right verb form in the exercise 3 d after they discuss in pairs peer checking w/c CCQ: Is the action completed or not? Is it affecting present or not?

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In pairs students doing ex 3 f. Give them time to take a look and think what the question are? Then demonstrate the activity by electing the questions from Ss and answering them yourself. If necesary you could write the questions on board. T monitoring, correcting errors if necessary. w/c FB
