Simple present lesson
Elementary A1 level


In this lesson students are going to practice simple present through guided discovery from a listening text about daily routine


Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice simple present in the context of daily routine

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide controlled and free speaking practice of the target language


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Distribute questions to ss. Ss to ask each other these questions in pairs and write their partners answers What time do you get up everyday? What time does your husband/wife go to work? What time do you have dinner? What time do your children go to bed?

Exposure and Highlighting (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss read the two text first about Laura and then underline the verbs in pairs. Explain the task Give the materials Ss do the task Early finishers write their verbs on the board. Take w/c FB. Ss discuss in small groups what the difference between verbs in the first and second text. Elicit the answers from the ss. Take w/c FB

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Write the sentences from the grammar box and elicit the rule from ss Write more example and elicit more rules for present simple. Draw a table and elicit the forms of grammar such as positive, negative and questions Ss listen and repeat the pronunciation of sounds of words in the box (play and pause the cd for ss to be able to repeat) Correct any mistake immediately when they are repeating the words Ss listen and add the words in the right column in ex.2 Ss peer check Take w/c FB

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss work in groups and do ex. 6 on pg 139. Explain the task. Give the materials. Ss do the exercise Monitoring and give help to ss if needed. Early finishers write their answers on the board Take w/c FB

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Regrouping the ss. Ss write a guessing text which is similar to the one they read, about their partners who are sitting next to them. Explain the task Ss write the text. Monitor and give help to ss. Ss check with their partner if what they wrote is true or not. Monitor.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Stage 1 Ss choose four words and make sentences about what time they do those things. Explain the task to ss Give example. Give materials Ss make the sentences. Monitor and help ss. Stage 2 Ss stand up, walk around the class and ask their fellows questions to find someone who do the same thing at the same time as they have written. Explain the activity Ss walk around and speak to their peers.
