Copy of Grammar: Quantifiers
Pre-Intermediate,A2 level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the quantifiers used with the plural countable nouns and the uncountable nouns based on a reading text about living in a town called’’Montreal’’ in terms of advantages and disadvantages or its positive and negative features. The lesson starts with setting a context by eliciting the word ‘ ‘Town’’ and writing it in the centre of the WB and Sts’s mind-map about town in terms of ‘‘ A good town’’, and ‘‘ a bad town’’ eliciting ralated vocabulary from the students after their pair work on the topic and their writing them on WB.After that, the nouns elicited from the students are categorised in terms of countable and uncountable depending on their meanings and forms on WB after their pair works on the activity and it is followed by small group activity using cut-up cards containing different countable and uncountable nouns and it is supported by related CCQs and they are clarified. Then, there is a group activity to match containing different quantifiers and countable and uncountable nouns using cut-up cards after the teacher’s explanations about quantifiers matching with countable and uncountable nouns. It is followed by a pair work activity about the text ‘‘Living in Montreal’’ containing TL for students to read and match certain quantifiers with the suitable countable and uncountable nouns on the hand-outs given and CCQs to elicit from Sts the correct usage. It is followed a pair work activity containing TL in which students will choose the correct expression to complete the sentence. Finally, there is a writing activity for Sts to write their own sentences about their own towns using different quantifiers in each sentence and then pair work to share ther own sentences containing TL.

Main Aims

  • Grammar clarification and practice

Subsidiary Aims

  • Countable/Uncountable review

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Set the context by eliciting the word ''town'' and wrting it in the centre of the WB. Draw 2 lines branching out from the word and write '' A good town'', and 'A bad town'' at the end of each line.In pairs, get the Sts to mind-map everything they know for each one and then write on WB one by one.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Get the students work in pairs for categorising the nouns on WB in terms of countable and uncountable nouns depending on their meanings and forms and elicit the nouns categorised from the Ss and get them write their answers on WB on their own.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Divide the class into small groups consisting of 3 Ss and give cut-up cards1 (Material 1) containing different countable and uncountable nouns and get Ss categorise these nouns in terms of countable and uncountable through group work ,support them by related CCQs for clarification.Get the students write their answers on WB.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Tell Ss some quantifiers match with certain countable and uncountable nouns. Then, change the group members and give the new groups cut-up cards 2( Material 2) containing different quantifiers and want them to match these quantifiers with the countable and uncountable nouns in the cut-up cards 1 (Material 1).

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Divide the class in pairs. Give the Ss hand-outs1 of the text ‘‘Living in Montreal’’ (Material 3) containing TL for students to read and match certain quantifiers with the suitable countable and uncountable nouns on the hand-outs 2 (Material 4) containing Grammar ex.1 on page 30 and CCQs to elicit the correct usage from Ss.Give Answer Key 1(Material 5).

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In pairs, get Ss choose the correct expression to complete the sentence in the hand-out 3 (Material 6)containing Grammar ex.2 on page 30 in SsBk and share their answers with eachother, then check in pairs.Give Answer Key 2 (Material 7).

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Get Ss write six sentences about their own towns using different quantifiers in each sentence ,and share them in pairs.
