Reading Lesson
Pre-Intermediate level

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide the Ss with the ability to find the gist by scanning using a text about fears and hopes in the context of growing up.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in speaking through discussions about the topics related to the reading material.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher begins the lesson with a puppet introducing it as Cookie Monster. T asks students whether they have any fears or not, whether they are afraid of Cookie Monster or not. And the last question is what they want to be when they grow up.

Pre-Reading/Vocabulary (12-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss learn the vocabulary needed for the reading text by doing the Vocabulary exercises on pg 42. There will be pairwork at this stage while guessing the meanings of the words and matching them. After Ss complete the second and third exercises the answers will be reflected on the smartboard/projection. Ss will do pairwork on the fourth exercise to compare and contrast their thoughts about past and now.

While-Reading/Speaking (11-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss read the text "When I grow up" on pg. 42-43. After that they will choose the main idea of the text on Reading Exercise 1. Then having a general idea of what the text is about Ss re-read the text and pick the most interesting quotes according to them and discuss the reason of choosing that particular quote with their partners.

Post-Reading/Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss will work on Reading exercise 3. They may need to re-read the text while discussing the questions in detail about what those children are thinking about the future, and whether they have the same hopes and fears as these children etc. Ss will be doing pairwork.
