Simple past Was/Were/Could

Description

In this lesson, students will learn how to use was/were in positive and negative sentences and different question forms.At the beginning, I will teach grammar through inductive method(TTT) without giving explanations about grammar but with engaging students in the lesson to review and learn the subject matter naturally.After that ,students will have a controlled practice and at the end by provided cards they practice speaking.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, my students will review, practice and use simple past was/were/could in the context of Today and yesterday

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson,my students will have practiced to provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in cards game and drilling in the context of Today and yesterdayB

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (0-1 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T stands in the middle of class and says: where am i? Ss: in class T shows says : i am in the class now but yesterday I was at park.(picture)

Test #1 (6-13 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T and Ss stand in a circle with names of their places in their hands. T says some of my Ss were at the gym( picture) some of them were at school(picture) T : tell me where you were yesterday and then ask this question of your friend. T: I was at the park yesterday. where were you?(randomly) Ss coninue until the circle is completed. T :Tijan, you were at school. Ss continue... T points at one of Ss and says He was at the gym ,Golchin can you tell me where was Ebro? Ss continue... T: I was at the park, I wasn't at school. Ss continue with negative form. T: stand next your friend with the same place. T: we were at park (points at one of the groups) they were at the school. Ss continue... T: my Ss and my friend and I talked yesterday( picture) about what? T: look at your paper ,there are 6 questions ,in your group ask and answer.

Teach (7-12 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T shows a table of to be verbs and there is an example of I am for present and I was for past. how do you pronounce was( v or w)? T elicits the grammar from students. Do we use am for past? do we use it for yesterday? for 10 years ago? Do we use was for present? do we use for today? do we use it for tomorrow? what is the present form for you? are or were? how do you pronounce were (v or w)? T completes the table with Ss and starts to drill. T completes unfinished sentences with help of Ss.(power point) .

Test #2 (5-6 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T gives Ss HO to complete it alone. there are 6 questions here, you have 2 mins to complete it. you have to solve it alone. do you solve it alone or in pairs? how many mins? pair check. FB: Ss will ask each other the answers( randomly).

Free practice (8-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T gives Ss some cards with some questions on them Ss should urn them around and ask each other. then they all stand up and put the cards on the ground in chronological order. T: there 4 cards for each pair put them on your table , turn them over and ask your friend. then your friends turn another one over and asks you. on the table or ground? do you put it like this(upfront) or turn it over? do you ask the questions alone or from each other? T : stand up please , now all of you together put the cards in order. for example: your birthday comes here first. yesterday comes here at the end . start. onhe ground or table? all together or groups?
