In this lesson, Students will be introduced to the Present Perfect tense usage, form and meaning through a reading text and comparison with the past simple tense.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of the present perfect tense through a reading text and activities .

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text 'Feel The Force' about Todd's passion for Star Wars films.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows different pictures with different situations and asks Ss what they think about them. and whether it tells about the past or present. Ss think for a minute and start to predict each situation. T elicits the meaning of the past and present perfect actions.

Highlighting (2-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-T chests a reading text about Todd Philips who has a passion for Star Wars films. -Ss skim the text in 2 minutes. - WC finds the main idea of the text. CCQ: Did he stop watching Star Wars films? Is he still writing articles about Star Wars? Does he watch Star Wars films regularly? -Asks Ss to highlight actions happened in past and still happening now.

Clarification (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-T writes marker sentence on WB a) In 1996, I met Ewan McGregor. b) He has written hundreds of newspaper articles about the films. -T elicits the difference in meaning, and form of the two sentences. - T chests the HO and ask Ss to read and answer CCQ of meaning/use and form in 2 minutes - Ss pair checks and raises their hands to answer. -T asks Ss to answer the form part. - Ss pair checks and raises their hands to answer. -T drills sentences from the text (choral drilling, back-chaining, individual drilling).

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T chests HO ex. 2 and asks Ss to answer in 3 minutes. 2- Choose Past Simple or Present Perfect to complete the below using the verbs in brackets: 1- We ______ Oliver yesterday .(see) 2- She _________ her leg the day before her exam.( break) 3- He _______ here all the morning .(be) 4- John _________ the present perfect. (never /understand). 5- I _______ to the cinema last night .(go) 6- She _________ in seven different countries, so she knows a lot about different cultures. Live). 7- Ow! I ______my finger! (cut). 8- ______ you ever _____ a ghost ?( has/ see)

Semi-Controlled Practice (2-3 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T chests HO ex. 3 and asks Ss to answer in 3 minutes. 3- Change from Past simple to Present perfect tense: 1. I finished the work yesterday. 2. I received his letter a week ago. 3. I went to China, Japan and Korea. 4. Janet applied for the job. 5. They planted some roses in the garden. 6. Peter decided to move to California. 7. They bought a new apartment in California. 8. I sent the payment yesterday. 9. They took the patient to hospital. - Ss check in pairs. -T shows the answer key.
