Work life balance.

Description

In this lesson , Students will learn about work life balance through some listenning and speaking activities to improve their receptive skills . I will do some pre teach vocabulary as well as listening for gist and for details. at the end , Students will use the target language to talk about their opinions and ideas through a given Dialogue.

Materials

Abc Questionnaire Page 28 - hand out for the gist listenning - Hand out for the detailed -Dialogue.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening through an audio that frames the importance of balancing professional life with personal life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a speaking activity for the learners to improve their fluency and accuracy skills using a dialogue.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-I will show a picture of a Scale on the board. then ask students about it. "what can you see on the board ? Where can you find this object ? what is it useful for ? -I will use the same picture but will add the word "work" next to the scale . after that , I will ask students again about what should be put on the other side of the scale. Elicit .expected answer : Free time , free activities , hobbies , passtime etc. Now again , I will ask the students the folowing questions : who has a job ? who works a lot ? how many hours do you work during the week ? do you work on the week ends ? if you are busy do you find sometime to have fun and go out ? Are you a student ? how many hours does it take you to do homework ?

pre teach vocabulary (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the vocabulary and make it accessible.

In this part of the lesson , I will get the students familiar with the vocabulary that will be exposed afterwords. I will present it via clear pictures , slide and explain then write each word underneath the appropriate picture. -Display a picture of : three differents activities : go swimming , go out with friends , go to the cinema . Elicit vocabulary then write under the picture : free time activities. Then show a picture of a man relaxing at the beach and elicit the word "to relax" - show a picture of a Family and ask : who are they ? what are they doing ? expected word : spend time with Family . ask again : do you like to spend time with your family ? when do you spend time with your families ? show a picture of a person who has trouble sleeping at night . Ask the students : what is happening to this person ? is he tired ? Can he sleep ? Does he work a lot ? so what does he have with sleeping ? answer : he has trouble sleeping .

Gist listenning. (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks.

At this stage of the lesson , after making sure the students have been exposed to the vocabulary prensented in the questionnaire , I will ask them individually to listen to the audio and thick three activities that Ali and Jackie discuss. ICQ's : Are you going to work alone or in pairs? : Are you going to thick Three activities or 1 activity ? : Are you going to listen or the read the questionnaire ? Then compare the answers. and give feedback.

listenning for details (11-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks.

at the stage , Students have to listen for details. i will give them a hand out about Jackie and Ali . two collegues who have a converstation about work life balance. they will listen to get answers about how these people balance their work with free time activities. using a handout they have to fill in the paper individually. Then compare with their friends , finally i will give them a feedback. Icq's : Are you going to work in pairs or alone ? : Are you going to complete the hand out or just listen ? : How many people will be talking ? what are their names ?

Production , Speaking (7-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

After that the students were able to listen to the audio , pick out some useful vocabulary about work life balance and compare their answers , i will give them a non completed dialogue ( hand out) in which they have to fill it in first with their own answers in Pairs then get them to the board in Pairs to make them read what they have written on the dialogue.
