TP1 - Listening
Beginner level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about jobs based on listening. The lesson starts with a warmer to revise nationalities from TP 1. This is followed by showing pictures to elicit the job vocabulary and drilling on them. Then the vocabulary will be written on the board in to show the stress of all the words. Then pictures will be used to do some prediction (pre-listening). Students will listen for gist (peer-check and feedback will be provided) and this will be followed by listening for specific information to fill in the blanks (peer-check and feedback will be provided). This activity will be followed by post-listening.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Skills: To listen to a conversation for gist and specific information in the context of jobs and personal information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • LF: To review/consolidate and practice jobs vocabulary. To give students practice asking personal information questions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Revision of nationalities from the previous lesson: teacher will choose a stronger student and demonstrate the activity; for instance teacher will ask the student to name a country and the teacher will tell the nationality and give an example. Then teacher will name a country and the student will tell the nationality and give an example. (Spain-Spanish-Madrid is the capital city of Spain). After the demonstration teacher will pair the students and ask them to do the same. Teacher will set a time limit of 3 minutes. Teacher will observe immediately. At the end of the activity teacher will ask each pair to tell the class one thing they talked about. Then teacher will show the pictures of the jobs in ex1, enlarged, and elicit the job vocabulary. Teacher will point at each picture and ask "What's her job?" Students will come up with as "a doctor/ a police officer..." If not, teacher will point at the picture and introduce the jobs.(Teacher will also drill on articles since students do not use article (a/an) in their 1st language). Once told, students will drill as a class/solo. After eliciting the vocabulary, teacher will write the vocabulary on the board and mark the stress of all the words, make students drill once again.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

Teacher will distribute the material (pages 16-17), and pair the students. Teacher will ask students to match the words with the pictures, will set 2 minutes and observe immediately. Then teacher will elicit the answer from the students. Then in 1c teacher will demonstrate with a stronger student (what's his job? what's her job?), then pair the students with new partners and ask them to ask questions about the people in pictures. Teacher will set a time limit of 3 minutes and observe immediately. In 2a teacher will explain the vocabulary (a friend, beautiful, married, single) and write them on the board, show the stress, say the vocabulary out loud and have them drill. Later, teacher will show the pictures on page 17, ask students questions about the pictures and guess their jobs/relationships.

While-Listening #1 - Listening for Gist (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist

Teacher will explain the task 2b: look at the pictures on page 17, you'll listen to Tina and Matt and match these names with photos 1-4 (teacher will point and use gestures while explaining). Students will listen and match, teacher will observe immediately. Then teacher will ask students to compare their answers with the friend sitting next to them. Then students will give the answers.

While-Listening #2 (Listening for Specific Information) (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with specific information listening tasks

Teacher will pair the students and ask them to take a look at 2c. Teacher will let them discuss for 2 minutes what they remember from the previous listening (where's Gary from? what's his job?...) Then students will listen again, and fill in the table in 2c. Teacher will observe immediately. After listening and filling in the table, teacher will ask pairs to check their answers. Then, teacher will elicit the answers from the students.

Post-Listening (9-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher will explain 3rd activity on page 16 and ask students to fill in the blanks with am, are, 's. Teacher will do the first one as an example. Then will set a time limit of 2 and observe immediately. Then teacher will elicit the answers from the students. Later, teacher will pair the students; students will cover the table in 2c (teacher will demonstrate) in order not to see the information, with a stronger student teacher will demonstrate the task; and students will take turns to ask and answer questions about the people in 1-4 (what's his/her name, where's he/she from, what's his/her job?). Teacher will set a time limit of 5 and observe immediately, do auto correction while observing.
