Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Babur Ali in the context of describing jobs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a role play in the context of interview between journalist and one of Babur Ali students

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To Prepare Students for the text and motivate them to read

- Present a Powerpoint slide with pictures of poor children studying at a non-suitable classroom, with another picture with a teacher writing on a board in the same classroom and listen to their descriptions and elicit so many guesses as I can. - I would ask questions like: What do you think who are they? What do they do? Where are they? Is it a normal classroom? -Show them a picture of Babur Ali with a picture indicating where he lives on a map, asking Do you know who is he? Where is he from?

Pre-teach Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To prevent learners getting "blocked" from doing tasks by unfamiliar vocabulary

- Students will be given handouts and they will be required to match some photos with some words while in other cases they will match some words with a definition. They will do that individually, followed by checking their answers in pairs, Then I will check with the correct answers. Then, I will start drilling the new vocabulary with them

Reading For gist (2-3 minutes) • To make the students practice skimming skills, and give students reasons to read

I will ask them to answer a question about Babur Ali and what does he do? - I will specify the time allowed to do that and the interaction pattern " to read and answer individually" than I will check the answer with the whole class and see if there is any who get a different answer, and why?

Reading for specific information (6-10 minutes) • To let the students practice scanning and give them the chance to read the text again in details to understand it

- I will give the students a handout with some sentences and they are required to read the passage again to underline what is the true information about Babur Ali in two minutes, and they will do that individually first, then they check in pairs, followed that I check with the whole class and find out if there are any different answers and why they think so? - Ask students to unfold the paper and work individually for 2 minutes to read the sentences and decide if it is true or false information about Babur Ali, then check in pairs, followed by whole class check I will present the answer key on a PowerPoint slide

Controlled practice (10-15 minutes) • To help students make questions using the present simple tense

- Ask students to work in pairs to complete set of questions about Babur Ali. - I check the answers' with them - I will divide the students into two groups a) group represents one of Babur Ali's students b) represents a journalist - Group A has to turn the question to be asked to one of Babur Ali students - Group B has to find answers to the questions in the passage. - Check Students answers', followed that by a role play activity - First I demonstrate to the students how it could be done - Each pair will be one time one of the students and the other the journalist - Students will vote which role-play they do like most.
