Description

In this lesson, learners practice reading for gist and for specific information. The lesson starts with a vocabulary study. The learners match the words in the text to their definitions. This is followed by a skimming activity in which the learners read the text and find who the people are in the photos. Afterwards, the learners read the text again and find the answer to the questions. Then the learners listen to the people who are mentioned in the text and find who they are. Finally, they write about a good friend- his/her family, job, favorite music and sport, ...

Materials

Abc Reading Text & Questions

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about best friend in the context of friend

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide process writing practice of a paragraph in the context of good friend

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask who Vince is. (Vince is one of the people who we mentioned in the previous lessons, Annie's son) I will refer the learners back to p24 and have them ask and answer questions about Vince in pairs (How old is he? What's his job? Where is he? )

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will give a vocabulary match worksheet so that the learners get familiar with the words in the text. They will work individually and check their answers in pairs.

While-Reading #1 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will ask the learners to read the text quickly and match the pictures and the text. When they finish, they will compare their answers with their partners.

While-Reading #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

The learners will read the text again in detail and underline the correct information about the people in the text.

Post-Reading (9-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Learners will write about a good friend -his/her family, job, favorite music and sport, ... When they finish they will read them to their partners.
