Procedure

Warm-up/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson and engage students

- T will hang a world map on the WB and put the country flashcards on their appropriate spot on the map.

Activity 1a (4-5 minutes) • To introduce country vocabulary to students.

- After instructions, give students HO - Ss check in pairs - For FB, ask WC their answers for Qs 1-12 and T will write them on WB

Activity 1b (4-5 minutes) • To teach students about nationalities and how to correctly pronounce each vocabulary word.

- Pre-teach "nationality": T: Where are you from? S: Turkey T: His nationality is Turkish - Elicit "nationalities" (Write 'nationality' on WB and draw a person; draw a few stickmen to elicit the plural form) - Ss (individually) complete 1b on same HO - Check by asking WC their answers and writing it on the WB next to the (already written) countries - Drilling the 12 countries and nationalities; focus on stresses and pronounciation

Activity 2a (2-5 minutes) • To let students listen to a recording and practice pronouncing countries and nationalities.

- Play recording R2.1 - Ss repeat both country and nationality at same time (Italy, Italian)

Activity 2b (4-5 minutes) • To allow students to practice matching countries with their nationalities.

- Demonstrate instructions by pointing to a country on WB, and having class reply with the corresponding nationality - Assign each student to be a "country" or "nationality", and pair them up. - Have students look at the list on the WB and ask each other Qs.

Activity 2c (6-7 minutes) • To allow students to form simple sentences using their newly learned vocabulary.

- T writes "I am from (country). I am (nationality)." on WB - Elicit examples for each country and nationality on 1-12 list. - Hang 3 pictures of famous people on WB. Write ("He/She is from ____. He/She is _____.) - Elicit which country and nationality each famous person is.

Activity 3a (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with a simple listening exercise

- Demonstrate instructions. Tell them to use the nationalities on WB to fill out new HO (3a). - Ss work in pairs. - Check by listening to recording R2.2 - For FB, check answers with whole class.

Activity 4 (5-6 minutes) • To introduce students to contractions and basic pronouns.

- Pre-teach "positive (+)". Write on WB - Give instructions and pass out HO (exercise 4). Ss work individually. - Ss check answers in pairs. Then with WC. - Point to objects with the pronouns "he", "she", and "it" around the classroom. - Write down the following on WB: I am --> You are --> He/She/It --> - Use fingers to demonstrate contractions, and elicit answers from WC. - Tell Ss (by gesturing) to use the contracted forms when speaking and writing.

Activity 5 (1-2 minutes) • To allow students to practice pronouncing contractions used in sentences.

- Read each sentence in HO (exercise 4) and WC repeats. - Drill WC ("You're - You're - You're Brazilian - You're Brazilian)

Activity 6 (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with the oppurtunity to practice what they learned.
