TP 8 - Mirror Images
Upper-Intermediate level

Description

The lesson will start by showing them two pictures and asking them to talk about what they see. Blocking vocabulary will then be clarified through a worksheet. Students will then read a text about the Imagined Ugly Syndrome and answer questions for gist and detail. Towards the end of the class, students will be asked to think of 3 advice they would give to someone suffering from BDD.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed and deduction reading practice using a text about Imagined Ugly Syndrome in the context of Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Subsidiary Aims

  • to practice speaking for giving advice to somebody who is suffering from Imagined Ugly Syndrome

Procedure

Lead in (2-3 minutes) • to set the context for the reading text

T shows Ss two different pictures and asks them to describe them "Is she fat?" "Does she see herself fat?" "Do you think this is normal or is a problem?" "Can anyone tell me the name of this disorder?" -Imagined Ugly Syndrome / Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Blocking Vocabulary (6-7 minutes) • Clarify blocking vocabulary for better undertsanding of the text

"I will now give you a HO. You have 5-6 minutes to complete the exercises. You can work with your group." ICQ's: Do you work alone or with your group? 5 minutes later T gives answer key for Ss to check their answers

Read for gist (7-8 minutes) • students will read to understand the general idea of the text

"I will give you a reading text. You have 5 minutes to read the text. I will then ask you questions about the text." Once Ss have read the text, the teacher asks the following questions: 1. What is Imagined Ugly Syndrome? 2. Who suffers from it? 3. Why do they suffer from it?

Reading for detail (15-20 minutes) • intensive reading to fill in the gaps with the correct name

"You now have 10-15 minutes to read the text and answer these questions. You will write the name of the celebrity that the sentence describes." "You can work with a partner." WCFB

Post Reading (4-5 minutes) • to practice speaking

"You will now, in your groups, think about 3 suggestions you would give to a friend who is suffering from Body Dysmorphic Disorder. You have 4 minutes." FB
