In this lesson Ss will practice reading and listening for gist and for details in the context of festivals and also practice some festival words with getting familiar with some of the festivals around the world

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write “life is a party “ on the B Ask Ss “Are you ok with this sentence?” “ do you like big parties “

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show PowerPoint pictures Elicit words Festival: “Is that a big party” “Do people have this party every year” “Do people go out and have the party on the streets “ Throw: “Look at the picture. What does he do with the ball?” Tomato festival Ivrea festival Garlic Garlic festival A thousand 1000

Reading for gist (4-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Give them statements Ss should read the statements about festivals and circle around the numbers they guess Check in pairs Stick the readings on the walls tell Ss your answers are on the walls Ss should stand up and find the correct answers in the text in check with their answers in the statement sheets Monitor them FB

Reading for details (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Hand out questions Ss need to read the text and answer the questions Monitor them Check in pairs Monitor them Regroup them Ss work in pairs FB Check answers

Lisening for gist (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Write on the B which festival do they talk about? Ss Listen to Ella and Owen and answer the question Check in pairs FB

Listening for details (4-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Hand out listening questions Ss listen to the text again and answer the questions Monitor them Listen again and give them tape script If necessary Check in pairs Monitor them Regroup them Ss check with new partners Monitor them FB Answers

Post-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned
