TP 7 - Defining / non-defining relative clauses
Upper-Intermediate level

Description

The lesson will start by asking students to describe Goths and TEDs. The lesson will then continue with a guided discovery task, followed by clarification of MFP. Students will then do controlled, semi controlled and free exercises on defining / non-defining relative clauses.

Procedure

Lead in (1-2 minutes) • to set the context for grammar clarification

T asks Ss about the reading text they read in the previous lesson "What did was your reading text about?" , "Can you tell me anything you remember about Goths, punks, or hippies? What type of clothes do they wear for example?"

Guided Discovery Task (15-17 minutes) • to clarify grammar points

"Now, you will receive a HO with three sentences. You will have to answer the questions written for the sentences given. Do not unfold the other part of the paper." T distributes the HO and answers the first part of question #1 as an example. "You have about 6-7 minutes to work on the first part." "Check your answers with a partner. You have 2 minutes." After 2 minutes: "Now unfold the other part of the paper and work with your partner to answer the questions. You have around 2 minutes" WCFB - drill for MFP

Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • to practice form

"In this HO, there are 3 questions. Each question has 2 sentences giving information. Read the instructions carefully and answer the questions. Do not unfold you papers." T distributes the HO and does 1 question on the board as an example. "You have 2-3 minutes to complete the questions. You can work in pairs". After 2 minutes: "Unfold you papers and check your answers. Do you have any questions?"

Semi Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • to practice grammar points

"You will now receive another HO. There are 6 questions. You will write the correct pronoun in the gaps to complete the sentences. You have 4 minutes." After 5 minutes: "Check your answers with your group. You have 2 minutes." WCFB

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • to practice grammar points through speaking

"We will now play a game." T divides the class into 2 groups "I need 1 student from each team. I will show the 2 students a word and they will have to explain it to their group using the defining proverbs. The team that will guess the word first is the winner." 10 words
