Description

In this lesson SS will practice reading a travel brochure on Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh(Egypt) and later write a message to their friends about their upcoming travel plans.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice for reading for gist and specific detail in the context of a trip to Egypt.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice process writing .SS will write a Facebook post in the context of travel plans.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greetings. I will tell the students that I am going to play a video and they will have to guess the name of the country. Play video for 30sec. Elicit. Please give me some information about Egypt. Elicit-Famous places? Is there a sea? What do people do in the sea? Do we swim? What else? Mime diving – going under water. Mime snorkelling – swimming but with a mask and snorkel. Do you know any famous Egyptian food?

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To familiarize ss with the vocabulary prior to the reading activity

I'll elicit by showing a picture of a coral reef, a mosque. and some pictures of traditional Egyptian food. Show a picture of tourists on a guided tour around the Pyramids. ? Point to the tourists. Are they Egyptians? No. Are they tourists? Yes. Who is this man? What’s his job? If the SS dont know the answer I'll explain that ‘He’s a tourist guide.He’s guiding/showing the tourist the pyramids, explaining the history.

While-Reading #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist practice.

I'll ask the students to read the brochure very quickly (3min),and choose which place they want to go for their holiday. ICQ-Are you going to read quickly or slowly.Are you going to read quickly or slowly? Are you going to choose one place or two places? Let the ss read and I will monitor. Now in pairs they will tell other why they chose the place. Demo, T- ss. I chose…. Because….. Ask ss to tell each other, in pairs.

While-Reading/ #2 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with reading for specific information practice.

I'll ask the students to read the article and find three things they can do in each place.and underline it. ICQs. Are you going to read about Cairo and Sharm el Sheik? How many pieces of information are you looking for? Are you going to write anything? I will demo one for them.SS underline 6pieces of information.Now Ill ask them to peer check the answers and provide the answer key. Now I'll ask them to see the hotel information in the box.Ill demo the first question with the whole class. Ill ask them to tell me the answer, and why. Tell the ss, ‘You have one minute to answer the others.’ Ss check together I write the answers on the board – T or F. (If time is short – I won't do this activity.)

Free practice -Writing (10-15 minutes) • To practice writing an facebook post or message to a friend- context- going on a holiday

Ill display a slide with a Facebook post and tell them about my plans for going on a holiday and that I want to tell my friends what all I'm planning to do there. Ill let the ss read the Facebook post. Now ask them to find 3 things I’m going to do. Now ask them to tell me which grammar I used – going to + infinitive. We use this to talk about future plans. Now I will show them the linking words – first, then, after.Now I will tell them to think about their future holiday. Give them a few seconds. Is everyone ready? Now, you are going to write a Facebook post like mine. Which grammar are you going to use? Yes, going to! How many things will you write about? Three. Great! Start writing. You have 10 minutes. I'll monitor and help if necessary. Ill take notes of vocabulary mistakes and sentences. After 10 minutes Ill ask Students to check each other’s posts. Now I'll write two correct sentences and three incorrect sentences on the board. Ask ss which ones are correct. Now I'll ask them to correct the incorrect sentences.
