Description

This lesson will a prerequisite to the subsequent lessons. In this lesson, Ss read an article about Susan's hometown Bath. The lesson starts with a pre-reading task about Istanbul as their hometown and places in a city/town. Then, the T pre-teaches the new vocabulary through a matching activity. This is followed by a while-reading task where students are encouraged to skim the text and answer a general question about the text and then, read the text carefully to complete a detailed reading task. Finally, there are some post-reading tasks where students have discussions about their own hometown.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Susan's hometown in the context of places in a city/town

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary in the context of places in a city/town

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic of places in a town or city and activate schematic knowledge

- Show pictures of Istanbul and try to elicit the word 'hometown' through a game similar to hangman. - Write 'hometown' on the board and have the Ss brainstorm on places in a town/city.

Pre-teach vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To pre-teach key lexis and blocking vocabulary needed to help Ss understand the text

- Put the Ss in groups. - Give some pictures and sentences including the new vocabulary to each group and have the match the pictures with sentences. . - Show pictures of the new vocabulary and do WCF. - Work on the pronunciation of new vocabulary through repetition and drilling.

Gist Reading (4-6 minutes) • To comprehend the text as a whole

- Write a question on the board about Susan and her hometown Bath. - Have the Ss listen and read to Susan talking about her hometown Bath and answer the question. - Have the Ss discuss their answers in pairs. - WCF

Detailed Reading (8-10 minutes) • To practice reading for specific information

- Have the Ss read about Bath again indivudually. - Give them a True/False handout and have them work individually and decide which sentence is true and which one is false according to the text. - Have the Ss work with their partners to correct the false sentences. - WCF

Follow-up Activity (10-15 minutes) • To give students the opportunity to personalize the topic and develop oral fluency on the topic

- Put the Ss in groups. - Have them speak about their hometown. - Give them some prompts. Talk about it's: Places Famous things Food and restaurants
