Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of words related to school in the context of education

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about education systems in the UK and US in the context of education

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The T asks the students to guess what his favourite subject at school was. After some answers, T sits on chair in the middle of the class and sets the context by sharing a short story about his high school years of which subjects he loved and hated. After that, he asks the students what subjects they liked / hated and elicits the vocabulary. Next, T tells the Ss that he loves the show "who wants to be a millionaire?'' and explains that they are going to play a short game that is similar. The Ss will be given cards with some questions on it and in pairs, they will try to answer as many questions as they can in two minutes. Then T asks which subjects they would have to study in order to answer those questions.

Highlighting and clarification (10-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shows some visuals about school and education on a power point presentation. MFP is clarified by elicitation, visuals. highlighting of word stress and drilling.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss are given a text about the educational system in UK and US. First, they are asked to skim the text and tell what the text is about?. Time limit for skimming is 1 min. Next, Ss are given the word box (the words they have been exposed the previous stage) and are asked to complete the blanks in the text with the words. Next, the students check their answers with their pairs.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students are given an handout that contains true / false and wh- questions about the text. Students do this activity alone and then check with their partners. There is a brief WCF at the end.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T asks the students what they think of the educational system in Turkey and what they would change to improve it. Ss work with their partners and teacher takes notes while monitoring. At the end, there is a brief WCF and delayed error correction.
