Materials

Abc Gap-fill handout
Abc Film review

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about a movie

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of film lexis

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks what the Ss favorite movie is in a brief WC discussion

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T shows a series of slides to elicit the blocking vocabulary from the Ss to prepare them for the reading text. The slides are about the movie Titanic. After eliciting a word, T asks some CCQs to clarify the meaning and shows the stress on the board. After that, pronunciation is practiced with choral and individual drilling.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (4-7 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist task

Ss are given only one paragraph from the text. T asks the Ss to skim the text quickly to find out what the genre of the movie is. T sets a time limit of 2 min. At the end, there is a brief WC feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with a more detailed reading task

Students are given the whole text. T asks the Ss to read the text and fill in the blanks with the words in the box. After that, Ss check their answers with their partners. After that, they are given a set of vocabulary items and definitions. In pairs, they match the vocabulary with the definitions by guessing the meaning. At the end, Ss come up to the board one by one and match the vocabulary with the definitions.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T asks the Ss if they have seen the movie and a follow-up question depending on their answer. While they are speaking, T monitors and takes notes of the errors the Ss make. After the brief discussion, T writes some sentences with errors on the board and Ss correct the errors with their pairs.
