Description

In this lesson, students will discuss in the context of social media. The focus will be on speaking about social media in general and Facebook in specific. There will also be a clarification of useful language so that the students complete their speaking task properly.

Main Aims

  • To give students practice in speaking for fluency in a discussion about social media in the context of modern manners

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students practice in reading for gist in order to prepare students for speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To activate Ss' existing knowlege of social media

Start: ''We will be continuing with the topic of modern manners from a different perspective and I think it will be a good start with a moment of joy by the help of a very small video.'' Have the Ss to watch a small video from one of my Instagram posts. Tell briefly to the students the purpose of posting such a video. ''I was on a ferry travelling from Kadikoy to Besiktas. The music began which is usual nowadays. Suddenly I realized this lovely old man dancing that made me feel joyful. I think I posted this on Instagram so that my followers can also feel the same way. '' Then ask Ss to discuss the following question: ''Which social media channels do you prefer to use ? Facebook, Twitter or Instagram?For what purpose?'' and T will write the question and the a sample sentence with ''think'' on the WB. ICQs: Will you be working in pairs? What are you going to do? Ss discuss in pairs and WCF.

Preteach vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To pre-teach key vocabulary to help students understand the text in order to complete the reading tasks

''Before passing on to a little reading on Facebook, let me try to clarify some words for you.'' Pre-teach the word 'peak' by the help of a picture. This is the highest point of a mountain. What do we call this? peak (n,v) CCQs: This is the highest point, right?Is it easy to reach this point? Pre-teach the word 'dissatisfied' by the help of the picture of its antonym 'satisfied'. This is the photo of a person who is satisfied. What do we call its opposite? dissatisfied (adj) CCQs: Is this person happy? Is this person sad?

Reading for gist (5-8 minutes) • To encourage Ss to read for gist for a general understanding of the text

'Now I want you to read this text individually for 1-2 minutes. Ask Ss to read the script individually on p.126, English File Ss Bk, U5b, for gist. ICQs: Are you working individually? What are you going to do?'' Next have the Ss work in pairs: '' Now I want you to work in pairs for the following T-F questions for 2 minutes.'' Then pass out T-F questions ICQs: ''Are you working in pairs? What are you going to do?'' Check answers with different pairs. 1) T 2) F 3) T

Useful language (5-8 minutes) • To provide and clarify language which learners may find useful for completting the speaking task

''We will be having a discussion in 5 minutes. Before that I will clarify useful language that you may use during the discussions. I will give you the handouts in a minute.'' T will write several sentences on the board and will briefly clarify the useful language. I think.... I believe.... I feel.... I suppose.... I guess.... According to me.... In my view.... In my opinion.... It seems to me that.... From my perspective.... From my point of view Positive opinion: I think that…. Subj+think+ that Negative opinion: I don’t think that… Subj+don’t +think+that Question: What do you think about? Have Ss to use these phrases in the sentences WCF and on the spot error correction

Speaking Task (8-12 minutes) • For learners to practice oral fluency in the context of social media

Have Ss discuss the following question:'Is Facebook a positive or negative thing?'' ''I want you to work in pairs and discuss the following question.Make sure you use ''I think...'' Write the question on the WB Have the Ss make use of the useful language Collect data for error correction and feedback. Work in pairs and WCF

Feedback error correction on oral task (3-5 minutes) • To provide language feedback on the task

Collect the errors while Ss are speaking on Facebook in pairs. Write 3-5 errors for the language and vocabulary on WB.
