In this lesson students will learn about the vocabulary related to sports.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the kinds, places and technical words related to the theme of sports.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation, interview in the context of sport


Lead in (7-7 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic of the lesson.

I will do a brief introduction about the verb 'to play', since lot of students misunderstand its real meaning because they translate it into their own language. I will clarify that the verb to play is used also with the topic of sport, since we play sports. I will write the word 'sports' on the board and ask my students to say whatever kind of sport came up into their mind. after brainstorming, I will talk about football as a famous kind of sports in my country and ask them about the most famous one in Turkey.

First Test (diagnostic) (10-10 minutes) • To test learners' current knowledge of and ability to use the language and identify what the issues are.

I will ask Ss to work in 4 groups. I will stick 7 pictures on the walls. I will give Ss 7 labels that they will stick under each appropriate picture. I will ask Ss to pick the most energetic person to go to the board stick the correct answers. The aim of this activity is to match the meaning to its appropriate concept. I will set Ss a time limit and the group with most correct answers will be the winner.

Teach (clarifying) (15-15 minutes) • To clarify issues learners had with meaning so learners understand it better. To clarify issues learners had with pronunciation so they know how to say it better. To clarify issues with form so that learners know how to construct it better.

Based on the answers written on the labels, I will Elicit words from Ss from the meanings on the labels and I will explain the word in what concerns its form, pronunciation. Also, I will give them examples of the words in sentences to understand better the concept.

Second test (freer practice) (12-12 minutes) • To provide freer oral practice and use the language productively. To test what learners have learnt from the teach stage.

I will ask Ss to work in pairs. I will provide them with a questionnaire and ask each partner to interview the other. The main focus in this activity is speaking and practicing and the best thing in it is that both students who like or dislike sports will be engaged since there are two ways of asking questions in the task.
