Description

This lesson focuses on listening for gist and details. As a warmer, there will be a session discussing the traits of doctors, focusing on improving their speaking and discussion skills. Followed by an activity to teach them unfamiliar words they might encounter. A feedback session will follow, in order to check their understanding. The students will then listen to a radio interview with a Doctor about cyberchondria .This will be followed by an activity to improve their productive skills in pairs or a group. They will listen to the recording again, but this time it will be followed by a few questions they must find answers to. The final task will be a group discussion of more detailed questions to test their understandings of the information conveyed in the audio clip, focusing on productive skills.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Listening for gist and detail in the context of illness.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking in the context of illness and cyberchondria

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Put up the picture of the doctor from google images, on the OHP. Ask SS questions like, is she sympathetic? how does she look? Are doctors really sympathetic? DO SS trust their doctors?, to set a context for the activities coming up. Elicit as many responses as you can

Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Use the matching activity to pre-teach blocking words like forum, exotic and sensibly. Distribute the materials among the students and aske them to work in pairs to do the activity. once they are done get feedback from them. Ask CCQ's to ensure SS have understood. Interaction pattern should be teacher-student for this stage.

Listening #1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Do ex 6 a and b on page 17 of English File Upper Intermediate students book. Hold the material and instruct them to read it for a minute first. And then distribute the material to the SS. Play the the voice clip of the radio interview. Instruct the SS to carefully listen for gist the first time around. Ask SS to work in groups of 4. Divide them using any method. GIve them this question - "whats her general opinion of patients using health websites". Use a drilling approach. Ask them what they understood from the interview. What was being discussed in the interview? Ilicit "patients using health websites". Then finally ask them to discuss in pairs about "whats her general opinion of patients using health websites". Interaction pattern should be "students work in pairs". Let them do this for 3 minutes. Once they are done, ask each pair CCQ's to ensure they understood. Following this, proceed to ex B on pg 17 of English File Upper Intermediate students book. Hold out the handout and instruct them to read it for a minute. Distribute the material with ex B to the students. Ask them to have a look at the questions. A minute later, play the clip again. Once its done instruct the SS to answer the questions individually. After that, divide them into groups of 4 and make them discuss the answers among themselves. For feedback, ask the questions to one member of each group. interaction pattern should be "students work in pairs" and later "teacher-student" for the feedback session.

Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Show the material with activity C to the whole class. Give them instructions regarding the same. Instruct them to individually read the questions for a minute and then listen to the audio clip to answer them. Following this, Distribute the material with activity C to the students. Play the audio clip once again. Once its done, ask the SS to work individually for 2 minutes to answer the questions. Next, divide them into groups of 4 and instruct them to discuss their answers in their groups, for atleast 5 minutes. Following this, get feedback from the class. Ask questions to members of different groups to know their answers and have a dynamic discussion. Reduce TTT as much as possible.
