In this lesson, students will learn about past simple and present perfect through a listening text. The lesson starts with talking about spending money. Then we listen to two couples talking about how they spend their money. Finally, there is some controlled practice through sentence formulation and free practice via speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, learners will have a better understanding of the usage of past simple and present perfect and will have had practice using that language and be better able to talk about actions and events in the past.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in the context of the past.


Lead in (2-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the context of the text.

I will start the lesson with a story about my last marriage with the usage of past simple, then I will tell them that it failed because my wife spent all the money, to make it connected to the listening exerciser.

Listening task (5-10 minutes) • To contextualize and introduce the target language.

First, I will show Ss an image about a couple on the WB and I ask Ss to discuss in pairs what the couple are talking about and I will ask them to write their ideas about the couple on a paper, then I will paly the audio about the couple to let the Ss understand the context, then I will ask them to check there ideas in pairs after that WCF and CCQs.

Highlighting target language (5-10 minutes) • To highlight the target language so that learners are focused it

I will hand out the conversation of the couple with gaps and ask the Ss to fill the gaps in pairs with past simple and present perfect, then I will ask ICQs, then I will play the audio again to let Ss check their answers. After that, I will get WCF.

Clarifying target language (5-10 minutes) • To clarify meaning so learners understand it. To clarify the pronunciation so learners know how to say it. To clarify form so that learners know how to construct it.

To clarify the meaning, I will hand out the Ss some sentences written on paper and ask them to work in pairs to asnwer the CCQs in the paper, then I will ask a student to write a sentence from the text on the WB, then I will ask some CCQs to clarify the form. Finally, I wil write a sentence on the WB with Phonemic symbols to clarify the pronunciation.

Language practice (5-10 minutes) • To provide oral practice focused on using the language accurately and to provide freer oral practice and use the language productively

I will hand out the Ss an exercise (find some who..........) and I will ask them to work in groups. Then, ICQs. Finally Ss get the answers from each others and start to say it out loud. In addition, I will ask the Ss to work in pairs and write about the last summer vacation of their partner.
