Description

In this lesson, students will discuss three different voluntary projects. They will practice gist and detailed reading tasks in the context of changing lives. The students will be provided an opportunity to personalize the topic through a speaking task.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get Ss interested and make the transition from the previous lessons.

Write the names of Turkish voluntary organisations on the board. (e.g. TEMA, AKUT, ACEV) Ask Ss if they know the organisations or not. Give a brief example of T's experience. Have Ss discuss in pairs on their participation in voluntary projects in Turkey: Have you ever taken part in one? What did you do? If not , do you plan to take part in one? In which organisation?

Pre-teach vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To pre-teach key vocabulary to help students understand the text in order to complete the reading tasks

Pre-teach Ss the following blocking vocabulary: Disadvantaged To make a contribution The wild Shelter(s) Swing To lend a hand Try to elicit the items from the Ss using visuals, eliciting questions and giving an example of a situation where we we would use the word Clarify MFP and drill the words focusing on the linking Use CCQs

Reading for gist (5-8 minutes) • To encourage Ss to read for gist for a general understanding of the text

Give clear instructions to Ss to read for gist for task 3 a ( U2b WB p 15): 3 a Read the article once and match the photos 1-3 with the paragraphs A-C. Hand out the article in U2b (WB p 15) to Ss. Ss read the article individually. Divide the class into three groups. Check in groups by writing the answers on the WB.

Reading for detail (8-10 minutes) • To practise reading for Ss to understand the text in depth

Give clear instructions to Ss to read in detail for task 3 b (U2b, WB p 15): 3 b Read the article again. Answer the questions with the letters A, B, or C. Have them predict the answers before detailed reading. Ss read the text and answer the questions. Have them check the answers in pairs. WCF and ask how Ss determined the answers

Post-Reading (Speaking) (3-5 minutes) • To develop spoken fluency on the topic

Have a discussion on the following question: Would you like to be a volunteer in a project in another country? Have Ss to discuss in pairs WCF and EC

Free practice (if-time activity) (5-8 minutes) • To practice further the concepts in the reading text

A mini game on writing sentences using the new vocabulary in the article. Tell each S to write two sentences on the paper that will be provided. Tell Ss the one who posts his/her paper on the WB fastest, will be the winner. Hand out Ss paper, each containing two different new vocabulary. Have them post up their papers on the WB. Have WC to check the others' sentences on the WB.
