Description

In this lesson, Ss will do listening practice through the context of aliens and will be able to practice the TL they learnt in the previous two lessons.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about two talking about UFO's in the context of whether they believe in them or not

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice using modals of deduction in a discussion in the context of mysteries such as crop-circles, Stonehenge and the pyramids.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T elicits the word "mysterious" from Ss by saying "What do we call something that can't be explained?" "By scientists, historians, archeologists etc.?" -Ss offer answers and if they cannot answer, T offers up answer. -T checks meaning with CCQ's such as: Is it something that is easily solved? Do we generally know who did it? -Ss give examples to mysteries around the world if they can.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T projects pics of Stonehenge, the pyramids, crop-circles, the Bermuda triangle etc. onto the wb. -Ss say whether they know the names of the places in the pics and then discuss what they know about the places with a partner. -Ss talk in pairs and then share their ideas with w/c. -T tells Ss they are going to listen to a man and woman talking about smth. but before Ss do, they will look at some of the vocabulary that comes up in the conversation and in a group discuss what the conversation could be about. -T hands out HO1 and Ss discuss in a group. -When finished, Ss share their ideas with w/c and T writes their ideas on the board.

Listening for gist (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with the opportunity to listen for the gist of the conversation

-Ss listen to the conversation for the first time and check to see whether their predictions were correct or not. After Ss have listened, they check with a partner. -T asks what the conversation was about and ticks off any correct predictions on wb.

Listening for detailed understanding (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with the opportunity to practice a more challenging detailed understanding of the text

-T writes the words skeptical, come off it and improbable on the wb and Ss in pairs discuss the meanings of the words. -Ss share ideas w/c and T helps with any difficulty in meaning. -Ss are told that they will listen to the text again but this time they have to listen more carefully to answer the comprehension questions. -Ss turnover HO1 to reveal questions and listen to the text again answering the questions individually. -Ss check with partner when finished. -Answers are projected on board and T asks if there any queries. -The answer to question 7 is not projected as T wants to focus more on the answer and the language John uses. -Ss give examples of the language John uses.

Post-Listening (12-13 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on modals of deducution which Ss focused on in the previous lessons

-T elicits the TL of modals of deduction from the previous lesson to make sure Ss have fully understood it. -The pics from the Pre-listening are projected onto the wb again and Ss in groups have to discuss the pics using modals of deduction where possible and have to give a reason why they believe so. e.g. "It must be alien architecture because,,,". etc. -Ss discuss in groups and T monitors noting any errors. -T writes errors on wb and gets Ss to correct the sentences.
