The Expat files
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students will discuss their opinions about "The Expat". They will read a given article about expats, doing gist and detail reading. They will follow this up with some vocabulary exercises.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give students practice in reading for specific information and detail through the context of people living in new countries - expats

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking for fluency, to introduce and review common verb-noun collocations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First of all, I show students the flags of a few countries I want to visit. I ask them which countries they might be. After eliciting a few answers, I tell them that those countries are the ones I want to visit. This time I ask them if they have ever been or lived in any of those countries. Then, I go ahead and write the sentences given below. "I want to visit ________, I want to live in ________, I don't want to visit ______. I give them 2 minutes to discuss and answer with their partner. In the end, I elicit a few answers from them.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Before they start reading the passage individually, I will pre-teach a few vocabulary by handing out a worksheet. I tell them they have 5 minutes to match the words with their meanings. Then we start discussing the answers all together.

While-Reading (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Before we start working on exercise 1, I will ask the students to read the article individually for 3 minutes. After they finish reading, we will start discussing the questions on exercise 1. After I will give them 2 minutes to read the article again and then will hand out exercise 2 and give them 3 minutes to work on it. Depending on the time and the flow of the plan I might also give them exercise 3 to work in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

As a last activity, I give them 1 exercise where they have to work individually. At first, I give them to complete exercise 1 and after I ask them to check the answers in pairs. For this activity, I put the time limit of 2 minutes for working individually and other 2 minutes for working in pairs. We discuss the exercise in the class. If I still have time, I give them to complete exercise 2 in pairs and encourage them to add more words to each verb list.
