I'll set the context first, that a man was walking and it was sunny but suddenly the sun went in and it started raining. Students will watch three pictures. I'll ask them to describe each one. Write some of the students' sentences on the board to deal with them later.
Use the students' ideas from the board to write a sentence includes the past simple and past continuous. Ask the students which action continued for some time in the past and which action interrupted it
Draw a couple of time lines; one for the past simple and the other one for the past continuous. elicit the shape of the timelines of the sentences from Ss. Ask CCQs to check the meaning. Elicit the form of both tenses on the board. Model and drill pronunciation orally and individually.
Give the students a fill in the gaps hand out and tell them that this text describes what happened to the man. Students work individually to answer the exercise and then they peer-check the answers together. Give them a sheet of paper includes the correct answer and make them check it and I may correct their mistakes if it's necessary.
Give them a correct the underlined verbs handout. Ask them to check the answers together before checking with the whole class.
Give the students two minutes to think what may happen to this man. Then students check in pairs and then with the whole class.
