Description

In this lesson, students learn about the present simple passive through guided discovery based on a reading text about the day of the dead. The lesson starts with distinguishing how in passive sentences the object becomes the subject. There is also parts in the lesson where the Ss finds out the passive sentences inside the text given before my lesson. We also clarify the form and the pronunciation of some extracts from the article. Finally, the lesson ends with an oral controlled practice, where the Ss can execute what they have learned from the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of present simple passive in the context of a festival called "the day of the dead"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a essay in the context of a festival called "the day of the dead"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic and to help the students become familiar with the present simple passive grammar.

-T sets another context by telling a story about himself with lots of present simple passive sentences in it, so the Ss are aware of the target language of the lesson. -T elicits Ss to say something themselves.

Reading task (6-8 minutes) • To contextualize and introduce the simple present passive that are related to the text

-T goes back to the main topic, and gets Ss to find and underline the present passive sentences in the text. (in groups) -T takes 3 samples from the class and ask CCQs for them to check if they understand the meanings of each sentence.

Highlighting target language (3-4 minutes) • to highlight the simple present passive so that students are focused on it

-T writes up one of the extracts on the WB and ask CCQ once more as a polish for the Ss. -T erases all the verbs and the lines and lets Ss to work in pairs to see if they can write the sentence.

Clarifying the target language (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, pronunciation, and form of the present passives so the Ss understand, are able to say, and know how to construct it

-T gives Ss a handout that provides model extracts from the text that includes meaning and form exercises in it, and has Ss work with a partner.(2 mins) -T gets Ss check their answers in a group discussion.(1 min) -T quickly goes over the meaning, but writes up one model sentence on the WB to work on their forms.(3 mins) -T finally marks the strong and the weak forms of the pronunciations. -T gets Ss to say the model sentences out loud to check their pronunciation and does hot error corrections.(3 mins)

Controlled Written Practice (10-12 minutes) • to provide controlled written practice focused on using the present passive accurately

-T provides Ss with 8 different ACTIVE sentences related to the text. -T gets Ss to make those sentences PASSIVE as a group activity. -T mixes up the groups and gets Ss check if they all have the same answers. -T gives the answer key for the final correction.

Freer Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with freer written practice using the present passive language productively

-T asks Ss to write a passage describing a festival that they know. (it can be from all around the world) (there must be at least 3 sentences with simple present passive) -If Ss struggle, T provides Ss with hints by writing on the WB. -The first finisher's passage is read out loud by the teacher.
