"Going To Question Forms and Shoet Answers" Lesson

Description

In this lesson, the students will practice the wh- and yes/no question forms and short answers of "going to". They will be introduced to question forms and shorts answers through a listening task. They will do a gist listening and listening for specific information task. Then, they will do a guided discovery exercise to clarify the meaning and form. After this, they will do a controlled speaking practice to improve their accuracy of question forms and short answers.

Main Aims

  • To practice the wh- and yes/no question forms and short answers of "going to" in the context of future plans of Rosie.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson

T sticks the pictures of a party, movie theatre and swimming pool. T "This evening, we are going to go to a party." "Tomorrow, I'm going to watch a movie." "On Sunday, I'm going to swim." T "What are you going to do this weekend?" "Talk to your friends. You have 1 minute" ICQs: How many minutes? (1) Are you going to talk about next year? (no, this year) T "What did you learn about your friend?"

Pre-Listening (3-4 minutes) • To teach blocking vocabulary

T sticks three pictures of South Africa, a flat and a customer. T divides sts into groups. T 'You have one minute to stick these words under the right picture.` Anticipated CCQs: Is South Africa a country? (no) Flat: Is it big? (no) Does it have a garden? (no) Are there many houses like this in the building? (yes) Customer: Do you give or take money? (give) Do you buy something? (yes)

Gist Listening (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with a gist exercise to help them get the main idea of the text

T sticks the pictures of three people: Jason, Andy, and Rosie. Writes their names on the board. "We will listen to an audio." a) Future Plans of Rosie and her Husband b) Future Plans of Andy and his Wife c) Future Plans of Jason and his Wife "It is about one of these topics." "Which one is it about? What do you think?" Students make guesses. Sts listen to the audio. T "Talk to your friends about the answer." "You have one minute." T "Which one is the correct answer?"

Listening for Detailed Information (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with a listening for specific information exercise and to introduce the target language

T "There are six sentences from the audio." "Read the sentences first." "Now, listen to the audio again and fill in the gaps with these words." ICQs: Are you going to write what you think? (no) Are you going to write these words? (yes) PS: If they can't fill in the blanks, play the specific minutes of the audio. T "Check your answers with your friends." T projects the HO on the board. T "Come to the board and write your answers." T "Are there any questions in those sentences?" T writes the sentences on board.

Clarification of Target Language (17-20 minutes) • To clarify meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T "I have some questions about them." T "Don't open the papers." "You have two minutes." "Check your answers with your friends." T projects the HO on the board. T "Come to the board and write your answers." T "Open your HOs". "Fill in the blanks with these words." "You have two minutes." T projects the HO on the board. T "Come to the board and write your answers." T "Write the missing words in these sentences." "You have two minutes." T projects the HO on the board. T "Come to the board and write your answers." T clarified the stress, intonation and connected speech on the board.

Language Practice (6-8 minutes) • To give sts a controlled speaking practice to improve their accuracy of question forms & short answers with "going to"

T "You are going to ask questions to your friends about their plans." "Look at this HO please. There are some words you can use." T does a demo with one of the students. T drills the model sentences. T "Stand up please. Ask questions to your friends." T "What did you learn about your friends?"

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To do error correction on target language

T writes the errors she collected during the speaking activity. T asks students what is wrong with those sentences.
