Description

In this lesson, students practice reading for gist and specific information skills. Also, vocabulary is highlighted with lexical inference and practiced. The lesson ends with free practice and students talk about their future plans.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about future plans of four people studying English in different parts of the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of vocabulary with lexical inference

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

*T greets the ss and shows a Turkish coffee mug to them which has been just used to drink coffee. *T tries to elicit fortune telling (there is a Turkish tradition to tell fortune looking inside the coffee mug) *T tells: I am a fortune teller. What do you want to learn about your future? Love, money, jobs,.... *T tells students to discuss their question about their future in one minute.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

*T tries to elicit vocab "study medicine" (with visual) and "computer course" (with a situation).

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To practice reading for gist and specific information

*T hangs the picture of the four people on the board and tell the class that these people has something in common. *T chests the HO and tells the ss ; -Read the text quickly in one minute and find their common point. -Choose from the options ; a-They are from England b-They study English c-They live in England. ICQs; -How much time?(1 minute) -Are you going to read quickly or slowly?(quickly) *Ss read the text. *Peer check *Whole class feedback *T tells the ss; -Read the text again and fill in the gaps with the names of the people in the text, Isabella, Kamil, Ali and Colette. *T takes the attention of the ss to the example. *Ss read and fill in the gaps. *Peer check *Whole class feedback

Vocabulary Practice (10-15 minutes) • To clarify and practice vocabulary

*T chests the HO and tells the ss; -Fill in the gaps with the verbs in the box, look at the text if necessary. -You have 3 minutes. ICQ; -How much time?(3 minutes) *Peer check *Whole class feedback. *T shows the form on the board and drills. *T divides the ss into 2 groups. *T hangs the pictures and their definition on the board mixed. *T tells -Match the pictures with the words. *Whole class feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

*T writes on the board a date "25th of August, 2027" *T tells the ss; -Now let's talk about your future. Imagine that we are in 2027. Where do you live? What do you do?.....Are you married? *T gives an example -For example, "I live in USA and I work as a yoga trainer." *Whole class feedback *Delayed error correction. *
