Description

In this lesson, ss listen for gist and specific details as a main aim.Firstly, ss play a quick game of word search to find cities around the world. Then, T pre-teaches some new words from the audio track. Ss listen the first time for gist then they listen again for a specific information task. At the end, they do a speaking activity related to the theme of the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about a holiday in South Africa

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a a holiday in South Africa

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In pairs, ss receive a word search quiz and try to find at least 10 cities in it in 3 mins. Winning pair get chocolate. T asks ss about some of the cities ( where is it? would you like to go there?)

Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T asks if anyone wants to go to Beirut to elicit (tourist/ cable car) and Cape Town to elicit (wildlife park) and visuals for (prison/ whale). Quickly T clarifies meaning and pronunciation.

While-Listening #1 (2-5 minutes) • To provide students with gist listening task

Ss receive four pics in a random order, then they listen to put the pics in order in pairs. To check answers, ss move around to see similarities or differences with the other pairs. T confirms answers in o/c feedback.

While-Listening #2 (2-5 minutes) • To provide students with specific information listening task

Ss read the questions in the handout in 30 seconds then listen a second time then answer as they are listening individually. Then ss check with their pairs then o/c feedback.

Post-Listening (10-25 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss discuss in pairs about what they should do before travelling (prepare clothes, buy tickets, call a hotel,, etc.) If ss cannot come up with the words, T shows visuals to help them. Then, T asks ss to think of their dream holiday. Then elicits the expressions used to ask about the place they want to go to, time, reason and activities to do on a holiday. Then each student receive a table to fill out about their dream holiday. then they discuss their answers with their pair. Then T regroups ss using colored rods so that they discuss their dream holiday with a different partner to see if someone has a similar idea. T monitors. Content/ Language feedback.
