Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, SS will learn about the modals "must, mustn't, have to, don't have to". Students will understand the difference between them in meaning, learn the form and practice pronunciation with choral drilling exercises. Students will be tested on their current knowledge of the subject and be taught the difference and then tested again if the input was understood. The lesson will end with a freer pratice.

  • To provide written practice of the modals

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will ask SS to talk about if they have ever been on an airplane.(WCFB) T will show the Turkish Airlines safety Demo video. T will elicit a few rules in the airplane.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T will chests first HO which the first test. T will give 3 minutes to SS to finish the task. T will tell students to check answers in pairs. T will show answers on the board. T asks students how many questions they got wrong and which questions were the hardest? T writes sentences on board to clarify.

Teach (15-17 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T will clarify meaning by using the modal sentences. T will ask CCQ`s in LA. T will highlight form of `have to`(negative form) and give a few examples in different tenses to show how it changes. T will do the same with `must`(negative form) but this time show how the form doesn`t change. After erasing the WB T will drill for pronunciation.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T will chest second HO. Tell them they have to write the correct modal in the gaps. CCQ: Are you going to circle the correct word? (No) T will give SS 3 minutes to finish activity. After pair checking,T will conduct WCFB by asking SS to write down the answers on the board. T will check the answers and clarify if there is a mistake.

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will ask SS to think about their own school, workplace. etc. and talk about the rules using the modals on the board. (1min) T will ask SS to write 2-3 sentences about rules in their workplaces and schools using the modals that we just talked about. (2min) As a WCFB, some students will write their sentences to the class.
