In this lesson, the students will listen to an interview with Jessica Ennis- Britain's first world heptathlon champion. They will listen for gist, specific information and for detail. Students will learn about different athletic competitions (high jump, shot put, javelin throw...) and talk about them

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks Ss "who likes to watch and play sports?" Raise your hands T shows images (athlete, gold medal, Olympics,) and elicits from Ss "What do we call that person who participates in a sport's event?" (athlete/ sportsman) " the one who wins the sports is called..........." (Champion) "The champion gets ............... when he/she wins the game" (gold medal) There are some very famous sports event in the world like .................../................................ (FIFA World cup/ Olympic games) T asks "last time Olympic games held in......... " (Rio Brazil) When ....... (2016) T asks Ss "Do you know Turkish athletes play different games in Olympic 2016?" T shows some famous Turkish athletes who participated in Olympic 2016 (Google images)

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T asks the students to watch a video and answer the question "enlist the games you'll see in this video." () T shows a video of World records of Rio 2016 Olympic games. T asks Ss to discuss in pairs the games shown in the video. T elicits the sports/ games (swimming, 200m, ......) T asks Ss to see images of famous World athlete (David Rudisha 800m, Javier Soto high jump, Kendra 100m hurdle....) T asks Ss "Who are they?" (Olympic champion) "what sport they play?" T elicits some sports/games names from Ss (images) (high jump, shot up, javelin throw......) T divides the class into 2 groups. T chests 7 images of sports events and their names (100m hurdles, long jump.....) T asks Ss to match the pictures with tags and paste them on the WB

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks Ss to listen to an interview with Jessica Ennis and answer the questions. (Activity 1) T elicits answers from Ss. T chests HO (Activity 2) and asks Ss to read the questions. T asks Ss to listen to the interview about Jessica Ennis again and choose the most suitable answers T asks Ss to check in pairs and then change the partner and check again.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T chests HO and asks Ss to listen again (Track 8.6) and answer the questions (listening for detail) T plays the track one more time (if needed) T asks the students to check in pairs first then work in groups, check and discuss the questions. T gives the answer keys to Ss.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T gives each group images of famous Turkish people (Tayyip Erdoğan and Emre Can) T asks Ss to think of 5 to 6 questions about the personality and ask these questions to other groups to see if they guess the right person. T asks Ss to discuss how and why did they become successful?
