Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about 'A tour under Paris' in the context of 'Travel and holidays'

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Places in a city in the context of 'Travel and holidays'

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start my lesson with a lead in discussion between me and the students about a place that they want to visit. Every srudent will choose a place, I would ask them if they know this place's history or not, and if they don't know, I will ask them if they want to know about it or they just would enjoy the beauty of the plece and its scenes regardless its history. This lead in will attract the students attention to the context of our lesson which is talking about 'travel and holidays'. There is a reading text about 'a tour under Paris' which is talking about the legend of under Paris and its history.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

This stage starts with a speaking task, the students will discuss two questions which are: 1) Would you like to visit Paris (the city of France)? If you visit it, what are the places that would you like to see? 2) Do you know anything about its history? If not, Would you like to know about it? I will give the students clear and simple instructions to make them understand what exactly to do before starting the task, and I will use ICQs which are: how many questions that you are going to dicuss? Are you going to write any thing? to make sure that they unerstand the instructions. Then I will let them speak for eight minutes, then I will ask them about their ideas that they get from the discussion (feedback).

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

This stage starts with a very simple activity in which the students will read the text quickly to find out if the text mentioned any thing that they talked about in the previos task (skimming). Then they will do another activity which is: Complete the summary of the article. Use one or two words for each gab. It is a small paragraph with spaces, they will fill these spaces from the text so they will do a gist reading, they will read the text for specific information. I will give them clear instructions, and I will make ICQs which are: Are you going to read the whole text? Are you going to write? this activity will take 5 or 6 minutes. After they finish I will make them check in pairs, then I will write the answers on the board to make them check their answers. Then the second activity is a five phrases some of them are true and the athors are false, they will read to find out which are true and which are false. This acticty will take 4 minutes, after they finish we will make a whole class feed back to check the answers.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

This stage starts with an activity which is: Find words or phrases in the text that match meanings. There are nine words that the students will search from the text (scan) I will ask them ICQs which are: How many words that you will search for? Are you going to read in detail? This activity will take 5 or 6 minutes then after they finish I will give them feed back on the board, these are the vocab that I would clarify to them. I will give them the form then the meaning using CCQs then the phonology and they will make drilling. After that they will practice the vocab with a match activity, they have the words on one side and the meanings on the other side, they will match every word with its meaning. This activity will take 5 minutes then I will make a whole class feedback.

Post-Readin (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

This is the last stage that will be a productive skill, the students will write a paragraph about a place they would like to visit, using the words they have learnt. I will make ICQs which are: What are you going to write about? Are you going to use the words you learnt? I will give them 8 minutes to finish this task then I will make feedback, I will read their paragraphs and write down the mistakes on the board and we'll correct them.
