Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of language used for talking about similarities and differences via neither/so/too in the context of things in common and coincidences.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in responding to statements in the context of talking about similarities and differences

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To raise Ss interest in the topic of the lesson and recycle language practiced in the first lesson

T puts Ss in groups of three and gets them to talk about things they have in common for a few minutes. Ss talk about things they have in common in groups and report back to T when they have finished using 'both' and 'neither' where possible.

Exposure to TL (5-5 minutes) • To give Ss the opportunity to read the TL in a natural context

T elicits the names of the people in listening 1.32 from Ss and gets Ss to focus on the tapescript again and asks Ss to find examples of people agreeing and disagreeing. Ss do task individually and then check with partners. T elicits a few examples from Ss.

Language Analysis (10-10 minutes) • To clarify and review the meaning, form and pronunciation of TL

T gets Ss to figure out the MFP of the TL by handing out a guided discovery HO (HO1). Ss work individually then check with a partner. Early finishers come to wb, where the T has projected the HO, to complete the guided discovery. T asks other Ss if they agree with what is on the board. T elicits the change of the auxiliary verb according to the tense and gets Ss to focus on the weak form of 'am' and 'can'. T drills chorally and individually if necessary. T elicits the use of differences from Ss and focuses on form on wb.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss are given HO1 and given 3 minutes to complete Ex2. Ss then check answers with partners. Answers are highlighted on wb and Ss check their answers pointing out any answers they don't understand.

Further Controlled Practice (10-13 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful and freer practice

Ss play So do I dominoes game. Ss are put into groups of 4. Ss are given cut ups of dominoes but instead of numbers phrases are written on them. Ss have to join the correct agreeing/disagreeing statement with a phrase. Ss have to agree that the agreeing/disagrreing statement is correct. If it is incorrect the S loses a go. The S who finishes their dominoes first wins. T models the activity on wb. Ss do task and T monitors making sure Ss have understood the task. If a group finished early T asks them to start again mixing their dominoes. This is to ensure other groups have the opportunity to do the task once. Once all groups have done the task at least once. T asks questions like 'who won in your group?' 'Was anyone trying to cheat?'

Semi-controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more freer practice

Ss are put into groups of three and asked to do Ex3. taking turns to respond to the statements. T models task. T monitors, as Ss carry out the activity, helping Ss with any difficulties. T calls on Ss to share some of their responses with the class.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and give Ss the opportunity to practice the TL in a freer situation

If somehow time is still left over, Ss will practice the TL in groups telling eachother their likes/dislikes, aims for the future etc, Other Ss will listen and agree or disagree. T will monitor and note any errors and write them on wb and get Ss to correct them,
