Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of verb + to-infinitive & ing form, and showing them the difference different verb patterns may make by exposing them to a various range of target language. The verbs include remember and forget, stop, try, like, love and hate.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Reading-Using a reading with highlighting the target language and getting the Ss to notice it within a reading passage.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I ask the Ss about the football in their country and what do they think about it, I start by giving them some ideas about different sports and different rituals they have in each country. Then I ask them to discuss in their groups. This sets the context for me and my peers who follow.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I give them a reading text that the target language is used in. and ask them to fill the gaps with the appropriate form of the verbs so understand that this is a grammar lesson about verb patterns.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I give them some sentences using the differences between these grammatical structures and I ask them to discuss it in their groups and reach a conclusion then I ask their opinions.

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I clarify the meaning of each item separately as a whole class feedback by giving them a handout that describes the grammar and differentiate between verb patterns. Then I move to the form and while doing the feedback I remind them that it's all about form and this can change the meaning completely. Then I drill for pronunciation if needed.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I give them a HO , a short text that is a controlled practice in which they have to choose the verb pattern. I also ask them 2 questions that they have to discuss in their groups.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I give them the next HO as semi-controlled practice so they can complete the verbs on their own but at the same time they have to form the verb patterns on their own.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I ask them to discuss the items in HO I gave them before and if these statements are true about them. After the discussion I ask them to rewrite the sentences that are not true about them.
