Description

In this lesson, students learn about will and its use for offers and instant (quick) decisions through guided discovery based on reading a text where will is used for offers and instant decisions. the lesson starts with watching a two-minute video which shows loneliness and its impact, or a picture where a lonely woman sits and misery is clearly represented through her look. and the students will answer three questions on either the video or the picture so that they can be involved in the context which is called socialising. finally, there is some controlled practice through MCQs and filling the gaps and after that there will be a free practice via a final role-play speaking activity.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of will for offers and quick decisions in the context of socialising

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about offers and instant decisions in the context of socialising

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

i will represent a video which shows the sufferings of a lonely person and how he turns to a happy one at the end of the video when he finally beats his shyness and fear of rejection and starts to have a friend. i will ask them three questions about the video to make them attached: 1- does the video end the same way it begin? 2-what do you think is more like you: him at the beginning or at the end of the video?why? 3-can anyone live alone forever? for the picture, i will ask: 1- do you think this woman in the centre is happy?why? 2-does she look lonely? 3-do we need someone to share our feelings with?

Exposure (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

i will provide three different short written dialogues which are meant to show the different meanings and uses of (will and going to): 1-i suddenly feel a bit tired... i think i will take a taxi. 2-don't worry_ i will give you a lift home. A- do you want to go and have a quick coffee? B-good idea...i'll finish this later. #-do you want to play squash tomorrow sometime? #-sorry, i can`t_ we are going to paint the living room. MCQ: these previous dialogues show you how to: A-make an offer B-give quick decisions C-give quick decisions based on previous plans D- A,B &c

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

the second question on the previous ex: q: underline every structure or form that goes with your previous answer?

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

we will go to the book page 73 where they guess the problems in the two pictures in pairs for thirty seconds and then tell me their guessings for thirty seconds and then listen to the audio to know how much they were right about their guessings. then they will fill the gaps without listening in one minute in pairs and after that listen to the record to know the exact right answers. then i will paraphrase the next question mentioned to be more organised: In each of the prevous situations the speakers decide what to do about a small problem : 1- when do they decide what to do? a) at the time of speaking b) before they start speaking 2- what verb form do they usually use? a) verb to Be B) will+inf 3- we use going to refuse a request when we a) have already planned to do something else b) have no previous plans after their answers and checking their understanding for the meaning , i will ask them to give me their own examples to represent the form. then, i will pronounce will and going to contracted using backchaining, so that they can absorb the connected speeech

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

they will answer the quiz mentioned on page 142 as a controlled practice so that they can fully understand the meaning of the usage of will used for offers and quick decisions.

Semi-Controlled Practice (2-4 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

i will write the six sentences mentioned in the record correctly and then ask them to tell me where will is mentioned and correctly pronounced.

Free Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

i will provide the students with the script of audio 4 mentioned on page 167 where they can use it as a model for them to write similar situations and act them in front of the class.
