Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about a chef's favourite food, his customers, his working life in the context of an interview with the chef

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write "food and dish" on WB and elicit their meanings by writing some words which can be sample for them: Food (meat, fish, pasta), Dish (Adana kebab, chicken curry, pizza margherita). Before delivering HO1 to Ss and give instructions: " Stand-up. Walk around and ask all these questions to each other" ICQs: "Will you work together? Yes. Will you ask and answer the questions in the questionnaire? Yes. After they do the activity, nominate one student and tell him /her : "Choose one person. Ask the first question to her/him". After answering the first one, the student will ask to second question to whom s/he wants to ask.

Vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To clarify MFPA of vocabulary in the text.

Stick some words on the class walls before the lesson. Give Ss HO2. Instructions: " Read the definitions or look at the pictures. Stand-up . Walk around and find and write the words on the walls next to the definitions or pictures." ICQs: "Will you sit? No. Where are the answers? On the walls" Feedback : Peer-check before WC FB. For WC FB, show the answers via OHP and clarify MFPA on the WB.

Pre-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Write the following questions on WB: " Who taught Steve how to cook? (His mother and several famous chefs) What nationality is Steve's mother? (half Burmese) Who is Alastaire Little?(the chef who employed Steve as a trainee chef). Put Ss in pairs distribute HO3 to them. Tell them to read the text quickly and find the answers from the text together. Do open-class check.

While-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist information listening tasks

Deliver HO4 to Ss. Give instructions: "Work individually. Look at the photos. Listen to one part of an interview with Steve. Number the photos in the order he mentions about them." ICQs: " Will you work together? No. What will you listen to? An interview. Will you put the photos in order? Yes Feedback: Change the pairs. Have Ss peer-check before open class feedback. For open class feedback, write the numbers on WB and nominate Ss to write the answers.

While-listening 2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Tell Ss to listen again (the first part of the interview). Give them HO4 -answer key (the answers of the previous task) Instructions: "There are some words here. Steve mentioned them. Now please write why he mentioned each item. Write down small notes about the words. How will Steve mention them?" ICQs: "Did Steve use these words in his interview? Yes "What will you write? the reason why Steve mentions. Feedback: Have Ss peer-check. For open class feedback put them in two groups, make each group a queue and give the following instructions: " Don't look at your sheets. I will show you the questions and aswers (via OHP) and you will run and hit true answer on WB. For each correct answer you will get one point ICQs: Will you read the questions? Yes when will you run ? after reading the question Will you hit anywhere? Yes Where? On the true sentence (If necessary, do a demo)

While-Listening #3 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Deliver Ss HO5 and Tell them that they are going to listen to part 2 of the interview. Instructions: " Now listen to part 2 of the interview carefully and Answer the questions on your own."ICQs: Wy do you listen to the interview? To find the answers. Pause after each question is answered to give Ss time to make notes. Play again if necessary. Feedback: Ss will peer -check (in different pairs). Then, tell them to look at under their desks to learn the answers.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Put Ss in different pairs. Get them to tell to each other their answers to four questions in HO6. Get feedback from individual pairs.
